me: sometimes i wonder if batman would understand what slade's doing with rose.
rinesi: I don't think so; it's a much more emotional relationship
equally fucked up, of course, but in different ways
me: and slade isn't, after all, entirely trying to create a robin. i think. i'm not quite sure.
rinesi: yeah; it's a good question
not a Robin as such, of course, and Deathstroke doesn't need a sidekick
or think he could need a heir. Immortal.
maybe it's just an attempt to do the best he can for her
me: kryptonite eye.

me: okay, yes, trying to keep her safe by keeping her with him, since everything's going all to hell and if the girl's ravager, well, nobody's going to mess with deathstroke's daughter the assassin.
i can buy that.
but. KRYPTONITE FREAKING EYE.
rinesi: she... wasn't crazy enough?
there was a chance the big blue boy scout would come after them?
I dunno
me: if he'd just *armed* her with kryptonite, fine. it's useful to have around. but. carcinogenic rock in her head.
slade knew what it could do. i note he's never put kryptonite in *his* head.
rinesi: point
the alternative is that he was shaping a weapon
a disposable one-use weapon
me: which... i would very much rather not believe.
rinesi: yeah
me: especially since recent canon indicates he wants her back with him.
rinesi: OTOH, this was a Slade who nuked bludhaven
me: GRARGH
unless canon tells me otherwise, and even then i might argue, i will believe that slade was being very subtly influenced by the likes of psycho pirate to be more ruthless with civilians than he would've normally been.
rinesi: maybe that'd explain the K thing, too?
Sent at 1:51 AM on Friday
rinesi: because nuking a city isn't being just slightly ruder than usual - it's, well, it's going nuclear
me: hrn...
i can fanwank a lot of his actions as being driven by desperation, fear, and trying to regain some measure of control.
at least, the actions during this particular problematic canon.
working with light and the society -- dude, the MONEY. but the way more important thing is the justice league. they'd messed around with light's head and joey had already messed with slade's. what's stopping the justice league from deciding that deathstroke is too much of a threat? he knows identities, too.
he lost wintergreen because of joey. it's entirely possible that he could blame the titans for that, blame that he hadn't been able to be a father to joey, and attempt to rectify that with rose by keeping her close.
bludhaven is the single biggest problem for me. he didn't do that for the society, he didn't do it for rose, he did it for *nightwing*. because of nightwing. but...

me: but if the very bad people you were working with saw that you had had an ex-hero with you that one could assume you were telling How The Society Worked, if that hero suddenly took off and went back to heroing, would they look at you a little differently? would they wonder what agenda you had? would they contemplate needing a means to ensure loyalty?
and just what would you do to prove that you hadn't gone soft?
rinesi: rats
yeah, I see that
me: i think i may have reconciled a lot of said problematic canon for myself. it is undoubtedly flawed and perhaps out-and-out uncanonical, so i'll need to alter as time goes on, but... but it makes enough sense to me that i'll accept it.
Sent at 1:58 AM on Friday
rinesi: it's consistent, at least
me: in that regard, it is better than canon.
rinesi: definitely
Betty: Wait, though, how do we reconcile the kryptonite eye?
Sent at 2:12 AM on Friday
me: one of the most powerful forces in the justice league is supes. ergo, either slade or rose has to be able to take out supes, both because the job working for the society demands it and because slade doesn't know supes didn't know about the brainwashing. wonder woman doesn't have a weakness as easy to exploit, so he can't plan for her. supes he can plan for. slade is most suited to deal with batman, he can't handle both of them at once. therefore, it has to be rose. he understands that. she wouldn't. and it's only temporary. so he doesn't tell her about the carcinogenic properties.
Betty: Mm, okay. Best of a bad situation.
me: (i'm still Very twitchy about it. i don't like the explanation i'm giving, but it makes more sense than that he was making a one-shot weapon or just didn't know that kryptonite, you know, causes freaking CANCER.)
Betty: Or just likes his kids crazy, and thought some brain cancer might help rose along.
me: *eyes*
there's only so much even such a devoted fangirl as i can do with lousy canon.
i'm sorry, devin. i'm sorry. i won't say something like that again.
but in this case it's true!
Betty: I don't blame Devin for anything after War Games. She didn't get to do anything she had planned from there on.
me: i blame devin for the kryptonite eye, nothing else re: slade.

rose, meta, slade
