You make a VERY good point, and it's absolutely true.

A character of my own is actually in a very similar situation to Bella-- grows up being the parent of the family due to her mother's relentless depression (that causes her to DO things like forget to make dinner or sleep all the time, which is a big no-no when you have a nine-year-old, a toddler, and a newborn in the house), taking care of herself, her siblings, AND her mother. In the end? She grows up to be a bitter, hateful, but generally self-reliant and invulnerable person.

Bella does not act like a girl who grew up being her own parent. Sure, she has the capability-- she's shown cooking and taking care of herself while Charlie, though concerned, seems to play little role in her day-to-day life, but she doesn't have the maturity.

Many of my own characters, even aside from the one I mentioned, are children who were forced by unfortunate circumstances and an EXTREMELY dangerous world to grow up far too fast, and every single one of them would bitchslap Bella and tell her to suck it up, it ain't that bad.

Haha, rather than an intervention, I'd say just play along but point out all the BAD stuff in the book. If there's hope for him, he'll probably notice the flaws by himself.
HDM is a VERY good series, I agree. It's not quite a favorite, but I did enjoy it a lot and in movie-land, nothing depresses me more than the fact that the sequels were canceled. 8(
