I think Abby, like Cameron is complex and flawed and gets a lot of bashing from fandom but I admire her caring and her continuing to try.

ITA Abby is a bit more of a grittier character than Cameron (louse of an ex, smoking, drinking, string of dysfunctional r'ships), but the essence is still there. I always get the sense that even in the midst of the chaos, when all the other doctors are trying to rush the patients out and forget about them, Abby has had some really amazing connections on a human level. Her recent interaction with the woman who had a double BRCA1 mutation and wanted a double mastectomy was one of the quieter, more beautiful storylines of the past several seasons.

I got a little sick of Carter as the show wore on...his character development under the original writers/producers was remarkable (esp. the mentor-mentee relationship with Benton and how he grew as a doctor), but then I think they didn't know what to do with him. The Africa storyline was just ridiculous, I'm sorry (hope you don't disagree!). You're right, Abby was always too complex for Carter. I think only someone like Luka, who carries his own baggage from losing his wife and children in the war, can truly complement her well. They both know pain, loss, and can heal each other really well. I can't wait to see how things go, assuming they don't do something stupid and make her lose the baby.

Carter was one of my favourite characters in the beginning but he never grew up. And tptb never let him grow up, he would have episodes where I was sure he would but then he sank back into the ingenue again. By season 7 it was no longer charming, just pissy. I think part of the problem was NW himself, he didn't want to do the addiction/recovery storyline properly so Carter did a few crossword puzzles at AA meetings and was cured (unlike MT who insisted that if Abby was going to= relapse it had to be done realistically and so we got two painful seasons of Abby drinking and denying), and then he wanted really long vacations which meant that they couldn't integrate Carter into the other storylines properly.

I think Luka/Abby work on two levels, one that the characters complement each other in terms of storylines (e.g. Luka has been searching for a family and Abby is afraid to have a child) and the other because the actors play off each other so well, whether in angst or in screwball comedy like the scene in the dressing room of the baby store.
