the whiny wheel gets the grease

As of yesterday Kat is officially a cashier rather than a sales associate. Granted, standing in one place for eight hours brings its own set of aches and pains, but I'm not complaining one bit. It is so much less stressful and labor intensive and it's been a long time since I was able to come home from an 8 hour shift and not just collapse at the end of the day (which is good since I really need to clean my house top to bottom again). I'm even told that the pay-rate is higher (not sure why considering, but whatever), although I'm not holding my breath for that to change any time soon.

Cue cautious optimism :) The front end managers and supervisors are a lot better than the remaining floor ones. (Did I mention the mass-defection? No? *giggles* On Friday, three people in supervisory or above positions left and, about a month ago, we lost an Assistant Manager when he decided that Target would be a better fit for him. When I heard, I was kind of tempted to look at their benefits package, but I really don't want to drive to Chapel Hill every time I work. Besides, I've got over $500 in Walmart stock already and am that many months closer to health insurance eligibility.) Also, according to coworker Robin, you pretty much get a raise a year no matter what, so I'm good :D I'm even considering looking at the management and administrative tracks of life with Walmart since a lot more of those kinds of options will start coming up when we turn into a Super-Center.

I'm even, amazingly, making friends there (I have a work-wife already, whoot -- her work-husband considers this "cheating" despite us telling him that, as a guy, he's supposed to leer over the possibilities). It probably helps that everyone knows I'm always willing to share my Ibuprofen, Five Hour Energy, and keep extra wrist and ankle braces in my locker that they're welcome to borrow, but there are lots of people there as "unique" as I am so lots of bonding potential as we gripe over our shit jobs, dashed hopes, and ridiculous superiors (although, in fairness, I've yet to meet a front end supervisor I don't like).

We're even going to get a Dungeons and Dragons game going soon. I'm over the moon. My character, Erm Hawkeye (her parents were indecisive and the record's clerk was in a hurry the day they filed her birth certificate: "Name?"/"Erm..."/"Okay. Next!") is a former employee of Crazy Gaius' Discount Emporium who ran away to be an adventurer. She's a halfling ranger with a striking physical resemblance to Kate Freelander and she refers to the party's thief by the nickname "Shrinkage" (retail term for merchandise loss or theft) which he doesn't like at all for some reason ;p I really can't wait to start this campaign *bounces* As if to prove what a geek I am, I'm bringing my Player's Handbook and dice to work today so I can show the work-wife how to create characters over lunch. Geek? Moi? Oh, yeah... *giggles and bounces*

I replaced Mr Nigel-Murray (may he rest in piece) with Ivy (it's a Dresden Files thing), who's a desktop (I either need longer wires or to rearrange my living room), and I'm pleased with her so far. She's a little workhorse (4 gigs of RAM and a terrabyte of hard drive space -- that amuses me since I once read in "Dos For Dummies" that "powering up a computer with a terrabyte of capacity would probably knock out power to your entire block) but I bought her an external hard-drive just in case.

And I found a nice pocket-watch at work for $7 on closeout (well, actually, I rang it up, asked the guy about it, and then raced back there on my break in time to snag the very last one). I've been wanting another one to replace my old dead one for years now (i can't wear a wrist-watch with the arthritis so it's pocket-watch or phone and they don't like employees having their phones with them) but didn't want to spend too much, so that was great. There's no design on it, so I may have it engraved at some point. I'm thinking just "memento vivere" if I do, but will have to see if I even bother with an engraving. Does wanting to get a pocket-watch engraved in Latin mean I've been spending too much time thinking about Watson, I wonder?

In other news, Betty is doing great. You can really see her putting weight back in so yay! *hugs her* She knows how to scare the crap out of an owner :D

The muses are chattery, which is just as well given the amount of lost fic we have to replace. Angst, romance, convoluted schemes to resurrect Watson with the help of the denizens of Hollow Earth? Check, check and check. Also this weird mental image that I may have to fic of Sheldon and Amy (from the Big Bang Theory) shooting one of those E-Harmony commercials. So, yeah, the crack!muse is alive and well...

Okay, and now I have to go to work again, so I'll talk to everyone later. Hope you're all doing well? *hug*
