100 Things I Cooked in Japan - Sugar Cookies

May 12, 2012 20:44

My butter was about to go outdated.  I couldn't have that.

Recipe: taken from the super simple recipe here.
Ingredients: all-purpose flour, sugar, butter, baking powder, vanilla extract, (wheat flower,) and an egg.
Making Time: 30-60 mins
Yield: This container of cookies, plus the one ate.

Alterations: For each new batch I put in the oven I folded some wheat flour into the remainder.  The final ones (the little circles in the picture above) came out the best, I think.  They were, unsurprisingly, the ones with the most flour in them.  It made them taste somewhat more savory and less like baked sugar.

How'd it go? Not bad.  I think I added a little too much baking powder, though, on account of how fluffy most of them became.  With the extra flour rolled in there they seemed better, though.

For the future: just spooning the dough onto the cookie sheets works well enough, but they look way better if you roll them into pretty little balls first.

These will hopefully go to my English students tomorrow.  We'll find out if they're too sweet for the Japanese pallet, I guess.  And if they are, hopefully Sam will be healthy enough to come get some tomorrow night.
