akame in ang ku kueh

Mar 31, 2009 12:55

i had some ang ku kueh for breakfast today & it suddenly hit me that i was eating akame!!

you see, ang ku kueh (in hokkien dialect) translates to red (aka) tortoise (kame) cake literally. it's a chinese snack that symbolizes prosperity and long life & is usually eaten during special occasions like the birthday of a one-month-old. the red skin (made from glutinous rice flour) is sticky & soft and the traditional fillings are bean paste, which i totally love, & peanut paste . =) each ang kueh is laid on a piece of banana leaf. recently there's been an emergence of modern ones that come in different-coloured skin (like pink) but then the name loses its significance totally.

i guess the picture speaks for itself. akame has been approved before they were even born. talk about fate. akame fans shout hooray! \^o^/ i will never look at ang ku kueh the same way again. ♥
