Slow burn. The slooooooooowest of buuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuurnssssssssssss please and thank you. I am a sucker for the slow shift in feelings and perspective and the whole slide toward the '...oh. oh shit' realisation. Ust and flirting and almost almost almost... H called it 'emotional edging' and she's got it so right. Yes, that's my jam. Emotional edging.
Fake dating OR secret dating
Like, see above. Fake dating so obviously because the whole 'oh but they're just pretending' angst is delicious, delicious candy. Coming from Bandom, I have to give a special shout out to the 'fake dating because we don't want to let the fans down' or 'fake dating because our stage gay was too much and now the studio execs want us to be wholesome and in love' tropes. Here for it.
Enemies to lovers OR best friends to lovers
... Have you met me? 'BFFS TO LOVERS' IS MY FAVOURITE TROPE. Special shout-out to my first OTP Mulder and Scully for starting it all with the 'partners to friends to lovers' variation. If canon has two people who have known each for a long time and have the 'omg so married but don't know it' vibe of inside jokes and 'would die and kill for each other' commitment then absolutely guaranteed I will ship it. For reference, see every single fandom I've ever participated in. My love for this dynamic also explains the siblingcest ships I have (wincest and waycest for example, looking at you). Codependency fuck yeah. That doesn't mean I won't enjoy the 'enemies to lovers' trope as well but it should be noted that what happens there for me is just 'enemies to friends to lovers' route. :D
Oh no there's only one bed OR long distance with correspondence
Okay, so I love epistolary fic of all sorts but for me it's part of the slow burn aspect of it. So if it's in the 'slow burn pre-relationship correspondence' then fuck yes, give me all your late night text messages. But otherwise the 'oh no only one bed' will win out.
Fantasy AU OR modern AU
Too broad! Does it have dragons? Fuck yes. Is it like generic 'sword and sorcery'? Meh, I'll read a novel. Are they all working in a professional kitchen? Or police officers? Or - the dream - in academia? Hell to the yes! High school AU? *gags*
Smut OR fluff
Both? Fluffly smut. Smutty fluff. But okay, I will happily take fluff on its own but a PWP gets a pass unless it's a writer I trust.
Mutual pining OR domestic bliss
MUTUAL PINING OMG YES. Dumbasses in love is a thing I enjoy.
Alternate universe OR future fic
Which one does 'everyone lives, no one dies' comes under? Happy ending fix-its please and thank you. I usually need to exhaust my canon related fic cravings first before I can go AU.
One shot OR multi-chapter
Again, depends what I'm after. Something to keep me entertained for a week, or something to read over the lunch break?
Kid fic OR road trip fic
I honestly don't mind here. Kid fic though is easier to mess up by either writing the child unrealistically or making characters too ooc. Road trip might therefore win by a hair.
Reincarnation OR character death
Bleugh, neither. If I had to choose then reincarnation but I don't go looking for it.
Arranged marriage OR accidental marriage
Ughhhhh either. Both. The only variation is 'we've been pushed into this by others' in the first vs 'this is a mess of our own making' in the latter. Both are rife with the slow burn potential though.
Time travel OR isolated together
Isolated together. I'm not a fan of time travel a concept. Largely because all the missed connections make me sad. Stuck in a cabin because of snow storm every time.
Neighbours OR roommates
Oh my god, they were roommates! But really, you realise this is just another variation that goes 'roommates to friends to lovers' right? Because yeah, that's what I'm here for.
Sci-fi AU OR magic AU
Again depends. In spaaaaaaaaace YES. Dystopian wasteland no. Werewolves and witches yes. Harry Potter AU? Oh fuck yes. Generic sword and sorcery as per previous example... Needs another hook.
Bodyswap OR genderbend
Again, neither really does it for me. Genderbend wins just about because there are some 'always the other gender' fics I've read that are absolutely brilliant. But I don't really like the 'suddenly turns another gender' trope (though I have also seen it done well, SPN fandom take a bow)
Angst OR crack
Angst. Unless it's crack treated sort of seriously.
Apocalyptic OR mundane
Mundane. Don't like apocalyptic/dystopian fic as a rule, although there is one absolutely stunning (harrowing) SPN wincest fic that comes to mind that I'm glad I made an exception for.
