Of Flesh, Fur, and Fang
Chapter One

The doorbell chirped out a series of notes much more melodious then most traditional doorbells, signaling that someone was standing outside the front door. In his new room a teen sighed and pulled himself out of his half full closet. He held up his fingers and began to put them down, one at a time as if counting down.

When the last finger fell a woman’s voice rang through the house. “Zhou mi, get the door would you!”

“I can’t mother,” he called back, brushing a bit of his freshly dyed red hair out of his eyes. “I have to unpack so that living out of boxes doesn’t stunt my growth!”

“Well, young men that can’t do what they are told tend to wake up with warts on the end of their nose!” was the returning call.

The teen grumbled something under his breath and began the hopping dance that allowed him to weave through the boxes to get to his door. His hopping, skipping, and jumping looked more like a delicate ballet than anything else. He grumbled something involving horrible controlling mothers and the horror of moving as he hopped over the last box.

“I heard that young man!” his mother’s voice rang from somewhere else in the house.

“You couldn’t have heard it, you don’t have your ears installed yet!” he countered as he half jogged down the hall to the front door.

“Doesn’t matter! I still heard it!”

Zhou mi rolled his eyes as he reached the front door. “Crazy woman,” he muttered as he pulled the front door open and plastered a smile on his face. “How can I help you?”

The man standing outside the door smiled brightly. “Welcome to the neighborhood. My name is Park Jungsoo and we live just next door.”

“Mom!” Zhou mi called, turning his head to stare back into the house. “Neighbors!”

“Give me a minute!” she replied.

Zhou mi turned back to the man at the front door and smiled sweetly. “My mother is probably juggling several boxes at the moment and will take a few minutes to get out here. Would you like to come in?”

“Sure,” the man replied, smiling friendlily. Zhou mi stepped aside and gestured him inside glancing up at the space above the door frame as he did so. Once the man was inside he closed the door behind him. “So how old are you,” Jungsoo paused as if unsure what to call the teen.

“Zhou mi, my name is Zhou mi and I am eighteen,” he replied.

“Ah, so are you going to be attending school here then?” the other man asked pleasantly.

“Yes, I’ll be a senior this year,” Zhou mi confirmed.

“He couldn’t play with others well enough to pass kindergarten,” his mother said with a smile as she entered the room. She was wiping her hands with a towel and when she was finished she slung the small strip of fabric over one shoulder.

“Ah, I hear that is quite normal these days,” Jungsoo replied easily. “Here, this is for you. A little welcome to the neighborhood gift.” The other man handed over what appeared to be several containers of food all bundled together.

“You didn’t have to do this,” Zhou mi’s mother said with a smile.

“It was no trouble,” Jungsoo assured her. “I always cook a good deal of food for some friends we have over on the weekends. They won’t miss this little bit.”

“Well thank you.”

“You’re welcome. I should be going now,” Jungsoo said with a smile.

“Of course,” she gestured with her head and Zhou mi moved to the front door to open it for him. “You’ll have to come over for dinner some time. We can share the food of our cultures.”

“That would be nice. Your Korean is excellent by the way. I hardly detect an accent,” Jungsoo commented as he stepped to the front door.

“We had an excellent teacher,” Zhou mi’s mother said with a secretive smile and the teen subtly rolled his eyes.

Jungsoo smiled, “I would say you did. Well if you need anything, anything at all, don’t hesitate to ask.”

“Thank you. We will keep that in mind,” the woman replied.

Jungsoo smiled and stepped outside. “Well I’ll see you soon then.”

“I imagine you will,” she replied with another cryptic smile.

“It was nice meeting you Zhou mi.”

“You too,” the teen returned. Jungsoo offered one more smile before turning and walking down the sidewalk.

Zhou mi shut the door silently and turned to face his mother. “The light was blue,” Zhou mi said gesturing to the small clear orb that balanced on the top of the door frame.

“Yes,” his mother replied with a smile, turning and heading into the kitchen with her bundle.

“I thought we came here to-”

“We did.”

“We are next door-”

“I know.”

“Doesn’t that-”

“Of course not.”

Zhou mi stomped his foot in irritation. “Will you stop doing that?”

“Of course, as soon as you stop being so predictable,” he could almost hear the smile in his mother’s voice. “Now come in here and get some of this food our nice neighbor brought us before it gets cold.”

Zhou mi groaned and rolled his eyes. His mother’s tone of voice meant that not only was the conversation finished, it would not be open for discussion again in the near future. He sighed and heeded his mother’s words.

The first day of attending a new school was never anything enjoyable especially if, by Zhou mi’s calculation, the rest of the students had been attending for twenty eight days already. He had tried the begging for a homeschooling option, only to be met with threats that he didn’t particularly want to repeat, let alone see come true from his mother. Instead of facing some inevitably painful form of repercussions, he had chosen to attend the local high school.

His guide to his homeroom had been polite but had left him outside the door and quickly walked the other direction. He sighed, no use prolonging the torture, and stepped into the classroom. There were a few curious glances his direction but nothing more than a fleeting look before students returned to their morning chatter. The only group of students that took more than the moment to look at him was a male and two females sitting at the far edge of the room. They stared at him in utter silence for a moment and he met their gaze and held it.

The male’s mouth turned up in the smallest of smirks and he said something softly to the females. They laughed and turned back to the conversation the three of them had been having previously. Zhou mi sighed and made his way back to an open desk near the back of the room, trying to ignore the overload of his senses. From his bag he pulled a book and laid it across his desk where he began to read.

“Hey are you new here?” a teen asked.

Zhou mi looked up and took note of the boy who looked to be a few years younger than himself but not from a Korean origin either, although the teen’s accent would have been a dead giveaway if his features had not. “Yes, I’m Zhou mi. I just moved here from China.”

“Hi,” the teen said brightly. “I’m Henry. I moved here a few years ago from Canada so I know the feeling.”

“That rough huh?” Zhou mi asked.

Henry laughed nervously. “Yeah. My Korean wasn’t very good. Even now I have some trouble. Our homeroom teacher, Mr. Park is really helpful though.”

Zhou mi nodded. “That’s good to know.”

Henry looked as though he wanted to say something more but the door opened and he smiled. “I’ll talk to you later?”

“Sure,” Zhou mi replied as the teen slipped a few rows over and slid into a chair. Around the room students stopped their conversations and began to move, so that by the time the new arrival had walked to the front of the room, every student was quite and attentive. The class president led them in greeting their teacher and Zhou mi followed along.

When they had sat in their seats again the teacher smiled and set down his papers. “Class I would like you to welcome our newest addition. This is Zhou mi and I want you to make him feel at home.”

The class repeated their acceptance of the order and the teacher nodded before moving onto whatever he had planned for the morning. Zhou mi sighed and rested his chin in his hand. He should have figured that this is what his mother meant with her cryptic comments of seeing their neighbor again soon. He was seeing him soon alright, sooner than he had thought since his teacher Mr. Park had turned out to be none other than Park Jungsoo.

“Hey,” called a voice that Zhou mi knew he should recognize. “Do you mind if I sit with you?”

Zhou mi looked up to see the boy from earlier standing above him with his lunch in his hand. “Make yourself comfortable. It’s Henry right?”

The boy nodded and settled onto the grass beside Zhou mi. “Let me introduced you to some friends of mine that you didn’t get to meet this morning,” he waved over two more teens’ carrying bags of food. “This is Key and Onew,” Henry introduced each in turn and they waved as they settled on the ground with them.

“So you’re from China huh?” the one called Key asked as he removed a sandwich. “How is the weather over there?”

“Sort of like the weather here, although we didn’t eat outside very much,” Zhou mi replied, taking a bite out of his lunch.

“Is school there the same?” Onew asked eagerly.

“If by the same you mean boring, then yeah it’s the same.”

Key snorted. “Don’t worry it doesn’t get any better after lunch. You’ll be trying to hold your eyelids open by the time we are done.”

“I think it is interesting,” Henry commented.

“That is because you used to go to school in Canada. Of course you think it is interesting,” Key teased.

Zhou mi smiled easily and proceeded to answer every question the trio threw at him. He found it easy to relax in their presence. They smelled familiar in a good and comforting way, a way that made him feel like he didn’t need to worry about the motives they might have.

“So how long are you planning on staying?” Onew asked.

Zhou mi was about to answer when the sound of chairs clattering across the lawn caught his attention. He couldn’t help but glance up. He wasn’t entirely surprised to see the teen that he had first noticed when he walked in his homeroom, facing down another male and practically vibrating with violence.

“What did you say?” Zhou mi’s sharp hearing picked up the teen across the small lawn asking.

“I said,” the boy across from him smirked. “That she is as good as a whore selling herself to a man twice her age.”

“You get down on your knees and apologize to her right now,” the teen growled dangerously.

“Or what? You’ll make me?”

“That and so much more,” there was a very real threat of violence in his voice.

“Shit,” Key mumbled as he climbed to his feet. “Onew go get Mr. Park,” the teen ordered as he rose to his feet.

Zhou mi watched as he crossed the lawn to the group that was forming around the two males. “What is going on?” Zhou mi asked.

“It happens about once a week,” Henry said with a sigh.

“Kyuhyun doesn’t take it nicely when anyone says just about anything about Taeyeon and Yoona,” Henry answered. “Don’t worry though. Key can keep it under control until Mr. Park gets here.”

“Don’t,” Zhou mi heard one of the girls say. “It isn’t worth it.”

“Do you really think that I am going to let him talk to you or about you like that,” the teen that Zhou mi assumed to be called Kyuhyun growled.

“Let it go please,” she pleaded with him.

“No,” he snarled, turning back to the still smirking teen.

“What are you going to do math geek?” the teen taunted, “calculate me to death.”

“I’ll settle for breaking a few bones,” Kyuhyun replied coldly.

“You don’t want to do that,” Key said calmly as he approached from the side and smoothly stepped between them.

“You stay out of it.” Kyuhyun growled.

“Aww look he needs someone to do his dirty work from him,” the other boy snickered.

Key narrowed his eyes and turned to face the instigator. “You shut up,” he said firmly and flicked the teen in the head. The teen opened his mouth to retort and a look of shock filled his face as not a sound came out. Key smiled in satisfaction. “Better.”

“If you want me to say out of it, then don’t make me step in,” Key said turning to face Kyuhyun again. His hand drifted to his pocket and Zhou mi caught a flash of silver as the fabric shifted.

Kyuhyun offered him a dangerous smile. “If I have to go through you to get to him then so be it.” Zhou mi could just barely make out his eyes, but when Kyuhyun tilted his head to the side confidently, he caught a full glimpse of the slight golden hue to them that almost made them glow.

Zhou mi jumped to his feet and Henry produced a startled noise followed by protest as he began to walk across the lawn. He couldn’t afford to stop and listen to a word Henry was saying. If someone didn’t do something fast, someone was going to get hurt and it wasn’t Kyuhyun he was worried about.

“Make the smart choice Kyuhyun,” Key cautioned. He withdrew his hand from his pocket far enough that Zhou mi could tell he was hiding a knife within it and he quickened his pace.

Kyuhyun shook off the young woman’s restraining hands and growled. “Oh I always make the smart choice,” he said.

Two more strides put Zhou mi firmly between the two and he placed a hand on each of their chests to keep them apart. “I think everyone needs to just take a break.”

“You are going to get killed you idiot!” Key practically yelled at him.

Zhou mi ignored him and turned to the teen whose body was literally vibrating beneath his fingers. “You need to calm down,” Zhou mi told him firmly.

Golden eyes met his and they gazed at each other for what seemed like eternity. Then Kyuhyun took in a shuttering breath and the gold began to fade from his eyes. When they were brown again he smiled, more relaxed than before. “Fine, neither one of them are really worth it,” he said and glanced away as if he was bored.

“Kyuhyun!” called a sharp voice. They all turned to see Mr. Park striding confidently across the grounds, Onew jogging out of breath behind him. Kyuhyun’s eyes immediately snapped to their teacher and then down to his feet. “My office, this instant,” Mr. Park ordered. Kyuhyun nodded resolutely and trudged off towards the school building. “Is everyone alright?” Mr. Park asked. Key nodded and stuffed his hand back into his pocket. The teacher shifted his gaze to the other student who had caused the trouble.

“You are to head to the principle’s this instant,” Mr. Park said firmly the student simply nodded resolutely and nearly rushed off to where he was supposed to go. “You two,” Mr. Park said finally turning to the two females who had been with Kyuhyun. “Come with me, you can explain what happened on the way. The rest of you, back to your lunch.” Both of the girls nodded with the eyes downturned and followed him from the lawn where the crowd was dispersing.

Key waited until they had disappeared inside the building before he grabbed Zhou mi’s wrist and dragged him back to where Henry was waiting nervously. “What,” Key rounded on him the moment the stopped moving, “do you think you were doing!? He could have seriously hurt you!”

“I’m fine,” Zhou mi told him and preceded to tune out the rest of his words as Key launched into what was undoubtedly a lecture. He was too busy remembering the eyes of Mr. Park as he had commanded Kyuhyun back into the building. Instead of brown like the man had possessed when Zhou mi had first met him, they had been a frosty ice blue.

Chapter Two

AN: So this little gem came about for two reasons. One I missed writing Super Junior and the fandom that comes with it, but I was not yet ready to write my second book. Two: My friend and a few of my readers were cringing at the thought that one of my characters might turn out to be a vampire in another fic I am writing (he didn't turn out to be one, he actually turned out to be a dragon) so that inspired me to see if I could write it in a way that my readers wouldn't cringe and this was born. I hereby solemnly swear that my vampires, when they appear, will not sparkle, be able to stand sunlight, or in any way shape or form be nice vegetarian vampires. Hope that reassures some of you. Now back to your regular scheduled programing.
