Obsidian scales glimmered in the midday sun beside the large lake. Small droplets of water fell from the wings of the creature as it slid from the water and spread them to their full span. The man on the bank judged that they would have trouble fitting in the great hall of the castle and that had been built so that ten horses standing nose to tail could fit easily. A huge head with glowing golden eyes stared down at him. "Do not," a powerful voice echoed through his mind, "presume you know a thing about me, Dragon Prince."
The title that he had inherited was said with such venom that a normal man may have cowered in fear. He was not, however, anything like a normal man. "I told you to call me Hyunjoong," the man replied with nearly as much irritation as the beast in front of him.
"Foolish Prince," the beast sneered as it lowered its huge head to the man’s level. "You are lucky that they need you if they are to live, for if they didn't your next breath would be your last." the creature opened its huge mouth, displaying razor sharp teeth before snapping it closed in threat.
It lifted its head and rose to its full height. "Enjoy your time while you can Prince, for the time will come when my kind shall fill the sky once more and your line shall be no more," as soon as his words finished the dragon snarled at him and then vanished into thin air.
Hyunjoong sighed and then shrugged. "He really does need to fly more," he muttered before turning and making his way back to camp.
AN: Keep in mind this is just a preview that I threw together for my upcoming series. It is only the briefest glimpse into what this series is going to be, but it will be another fantasy AU by yours truly.

Summary: In the peaceful country of Branimir, the Dragon King rules with wisdom and trains his heir Hyunjoong, the Dragon Prince, to rule after him in the same way. Through his rule the evils of magic and dragons have been nearly destroyed and even the trouble causing gypsies have been contained. Yet when the prince is captured by one of the very things he has been taught is evil, he will begin to learn that life may not be exactly as he thought it was.
