American sports fans amuse me...

So, I've already had one person tell me that Becks was unimpressive in his debut for Los Angeles tonight. (On a side note, I'd like to petition the team to change the club name to "Galaxy Football Club of Los Angeles; keep it in the spirit of football, you know...) I had to point out that Becks is one player, on a wheel that's probably at about 80% right now, and that the other 9 position players largely stink. Heck, Kyle Martino was a reject from our sorry squad in Columbus! Becks was the second best player on the pitch for LA tonight. Xavier was a man possessed, doing his level best to keep Chelsea from scoring more than once. And while the few shots LA managed to get on goal (the last I saw Chelsea had about 33 shots to LA's 6) were either weak efforts or nicely handled by the Chelsea keepers. Cech had a beautiful punchout in the first half, in fact. But having Landon Donovan on the same pitch as John Terry just makes the "star" of the US national side look like a high school JV player. Then again, Donovan is the most overrated player in US soccer, IMHO.

It's nice that the All-Star side beat Celtic 2-0 this past week. And I'm sure that FC Dallas or New England could compete in the SPL. But the MLS still has a ways to go. When an injured Becks looks heads and shoulders better than his teammates, someone has to be a realist, and you're not going to find them in ESPN's announce booth. Heck, Wynalda is so pathetic he was more worried about Posh wearing her sunglasses through the entire game than we was about the action on the pitch. I felt like I was listening to Joan Rivers on Oscar night. And as for Posh, it's nice to see that the original footballer's wife was hitting it off so well with the basketballer's wife. But every five minutes to show them chatting it up in the private box, ESPN??? Get back to the action on the pitch!
