[MEME] 2022 IN REVIEW

Jan 09, 2023 21:06

A window in time while in NZ. Let's go :)

1. What did you do in 2022 that you'd never done before?
Get married LMAO; spend New Years Eve on a plane; live through a 4-week kitchen renovation and cook meals in an instapot on my bathroom floor OTL; work an in-house/corporate job; cultivate 6 cherry tomato plants in a single (medium-sized) pot; design a wedding ring; solder copper (for a wedding union piece); work with epoxy/glass (for our LotR-themed cake topper :D); MEET MISHY IN PERSON! FINALLY! And saw Bert Kreischer live.

2. Did you keep your New Year's resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
Recap:

- Find/get a new job before I get married
Against all odds and expectations, this was an actual success?? I accepted an offer from my current/new job about two weeks before getting married, and started said job two weeks after. Basically quit private practice and went in house!

- Be more active/work out more
I'm not sure how this one turned out actually. In between renos and old!job misery and wedding stuff, I tried to work out more but I can't actually recall how often/well this one panned out.

- Draw one piece of artwork digitally
Technically a success. I drew so many goldfish for my wedding... the invites, seating placards, menus, thank you cards, etc etc. If I remember to do so after I get back from my honeymoon later this month, I'll upload photos to tumblr.

For this year:
- Work out/be more active consistently
- Draw a single piece of fanart
- Submit a stationary design to Zazzle for shits and giggles

3. Did anyone close to you give birth?
Yes. A high school friend gave birth to her third kid, and a former colleague gave birth to her first.

4. Did anyone close to you die?
No.

5. What countries did you visit?
I was on a plane to New Zealand on Jan 30... does that count? XD;

6. What would you like to have in 2023 that you lacked in 2022?
My husband and I are trying to start a real estate business... I'm also trying to determine what I'd like to do with my hobbies--so, in short, other forms of (semi) passive income?

7. What date from 2022 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?
My wedding date :)

8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?
Getting married in a somewhat haphazard manner (we pretty much officiated ourselves and DIY'd a shitton of stuff lol).

9. What was your biggest failure?
Not getting to do much else hobby-wise aside from wedding DIY stuff? This one's hard since 2022 was pretty good overall. Only thing that stands out is perhaps dealing with my wedding makeup artist. The makeup artist switched up my eye look on the day of (what she did was a distinct departure from the trial run a month prior), so I'm not the biggest fan of how I look in half of my photos lol.

10. Did you suffer illness or injury?
Does getting scratched by a dog on my knee right before the wedding count? LOL

11. What were the best things you bought?
Glass cabochons. They proved me right with our wedding cake topper proof of concept XD

12. Whose behaviour merited celebration?
Our wedding party and quite a number of our German guests. There were some unfortunate incidents that happened (due to no one's fault), but all those involved really stepped up and helped out when needed.

13. Whose behaviour appalled you?
Putin and all his American shills.

14. Where did most of your money go?
Renovations, wedding.

15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?
Getting done with the wedding topper and seeing/hosting all our foreign guests.

16. What song will always remind you of 2022?
The piano remix/mashup of certain Howard Shore LotR themes that we used for our wedding march (there's a definite theme going on for 2022 LMAO).

17. Compared to this time last year, are you:
i. happier or sadder? Happier. Got hitched and a new job. 2022 was a good year.
ii. thinner or fatter? Certainly heavier. The tightness of certain pants/dresses also suggests fatter XD;;;
iii. richer or poorer? Poorer, monetarily given my job change. But richer, emotionally and mentally.

18. What do you wish you'd done more of?
The answer remains "hobby-type things." Though with the advent of a new personal computer that I can actually use my old wacom tablet with, I have hopes for 2023!

19. What do you wish you'd done less of?
Live in a reno zone. But I don't foresee that happening again for a long, loooong time.

20. How did you spend Christmas?
We went to my parents' house on Christmas eve and basically ate a lot of food, napped, and continued eating. My sibling distributed souvenir gifts from London, and we gave our parents their present on Christmas eve. After a dinner of homemade ribs and Honey Baked Ham sides, my mom and I made glutinous rice balls filled with an assortment of fillings while Grace walked our parents through their London trip photos. Christmas morning breakfast was the glutinous rice balls we'd made the night prior. We went back to Chicago, and Grace joined my husband and I in a present exchange and night of leftovers/puzzling.

21. Where did you ring in 2022? How will you ring in 2023?
2022: We drove an hour out to Sarah/Zach's house in one of the BuFu north Illinois suburbs. Super small gathering--originally was supposed to be bigger, but it got kneecapped due to COVID/non-COVID illnesses. So it was just us, the hosts, and two other couples. Ate some skewers, drank mulled cider, and just had a chill time catching up and petting their kitties. Found out belatedly that Chicago was putting on a massive fireworks display--which we would've gotten a really good view of had we stayed home, lol. Drank port and "sparkling red" that we'd brought in lieu of champagne.

2023: We were in plane over the Pacific on New Years Eve NZ time and my husband woke me up from a fitful doze for some champagne.... but technically at no point during our flight were we ever in a time zone that was 11:59pm January 31, 2022. so we never truly rang it in. TIME IS SOCIAL CONSTRUCT.

22. Did you fall in love in 2022?
I got married. All signs point to no change from 2021 lol

23. How many one-night stands?
None.

24. What was your favorite TV program?
Netflix's adaptation of The Sandman. All hail Neil Gaiman for actually being involved.

25. Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate this time last year?
No.

26. What was the best book you read?
I didn't actually read any books in 2022. A tragedy.

27. What was your greatest musical discovery?
Via Youtube shorts (and I guess Tiktok by extension), there seems to have been a revival of older songs from decades past.

28. What did you want and get?
Time off from my private practice job, a new kitchen, and a new job,.

29. What did you want and not get?
More passive income lol.

30. What was your favourite film of this year?
Glass Onion

31. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?
Mid-30s. Fiancé toasted me at the stroke of midnight and gave me my birthday gifts: a damascus steel machete, and a Morris/chicken-pig plush (from Shang Chi). I worked on the Year in Review meme in the morning, and basically faffed/lazed around indoors since it was so bloody cold. Didn't stop us from going out to Cooper's Hawk for dinner though--had a lovely meal and got good and sloshed on a flight of wines.

32. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?
Probably if the second of my two bridesmaids and her husband could actually attend the wedding--they had to back out because she broke her foot and had to get re-surgery right before the wedding.

33. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2022?
More graphic tees and athleisure.

34. What kept you sane?
My ex-fiancé (lol) and the support of friends/family.

35. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?
Henry Cavill remains wonderful eye candy. We actually printed out a photo of his face (as Geralt) and taped it onto the bachelorette Pin-the-Dick on the stud game poster.

36. What political issue stirred you the most?
The overturning of Roe v. Wade and the war in Ukraine.

37. Who did you miss?
All non-Chicago guests after the wedding XD;;;

38. Who was the best new person you met?
Does Mishy count? XD; Finally met her in person, and she is wonderful and has the soul of an old Scotsman with regards to her taste in single malt whiskies lmao.

39. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2022.
Corporate world is fucking weird.

40. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year:
WHAT DOES THE FOX SAY??

Bonus. What was your favorite moment of the year?
Random moment: When we finally mounted our LED rigged Eye of Sauron onto its Barad-dûr mount after 5 separate proof of concept attempts and struck that off our To-Do list.
