They could name the damn thing, "The Great Storm of 2005." There is no way I'll forget this. For one thing the damage it did to our basement. The other is the damage to the whole area, the town, the state, the whole northeastern corridor.
Anyway, updates from last night: My dad was up all morning. The contractor and another guy showed up with a pump and they worked into the morning. The roads are a mess! I woke up at 12, swore loudly, since I was supposed to be at work for 1130. I discovered mom had called them and said I couldn't make it in. The doorbell rang later . . . DHL guy making a special saturday delivery . . . Mike's fixed iPod. Then my aunt and her fiancée got into town, but the roads were cut off. I went with my dad to get them, and we saw first hand the destruction. I'm getting pictures later, so you can see some of it.
First off, we saw Root Rd, once you turn off Mountain, was missing a portion of it . . . caved due to water ruining the road bed. Before we made it a couple hundred feet on Mountain, we got stopped. The creak that crosses Mountain had crested . . . the road was falling apart on both sides. One way zig zag traffic . . . the trooper that talked to my dad was heading down Mountain to check on other roads. Several DOT trucks followed him. Moving down Mountain we saw debris and we got to the intersection with Battle and Turnpike. The westbound Turnpike crossed the Gillette brook (which is now a river) and it had problems. Battle was closed . . . We got down to Stebbins and Florida . . . the stream there crested . . . caved in road . . . with a car in it . . . had to go on Turnpike to 83, then to Main. We saw cresting rivers/streams/brooks and huge ponds that weren't there before . . . several roads falling apart.
I'm going out later with a camera. I'll post some pics from the basement and the town soon.
