Five Card Draw

The lighting dim, a haze of cigar smoke hung in the air. An obscene amount of spent liquor bottles graced the service cart. They had all had plenty to drink.

The foursome sat around the table in the Admiral’s quarters, Saul dealing with Ellen on his left, then Laura, then Bill. The women were clad only in their bras and panties. Bill had just lost his socks.

Laura giggled.

Ellen leaned close to Saul. “Come on, baby,” she purred into his ear. “I wanna see Bill’s junk.” Saul laughed. The men were down to their boxers. Laura giggled again. Ellen glanced at her hand. “I’ll take one,” she said with a devious smile, her voice seductively low. The threesome eyed her suspiciously. Certainly she couldn’t be bluffing; there was no incentive to fold. Saul flipped her a card and looked to Laura.

“Oh, I’m fine,” she replied coyly, with a provocatively sweet smile. Her calm was maddening.

Saul and Bill flinched.

“Give me three off the top,” Bill said, still holding onto a thin thread of confidence. With Ellen asking for a single card and Laura standing pat, he was just on the edge. He grinned at Saul, trying not to think about how close he was to actually plunging over.

Saul tossed out Bill’s cards with a chuckle. “And the dealer takes three, too,” he said, setting the deck aside.

The foursome eyed each other warily.

Ellen laid down her cards.

“Five hearts, nice,” Saul said, kissing her. “That’s my woman.”

“Oh, Saul,” she cooed.

Ellen had the flush, but Bill felt it.

“Laura?” Saul asked.

She bit her lip slightly and narrowed her eyes. “Queens over tens,” she said with a sexy smirk.

“Nicer,” Saul breathed, admiring the president’s full house.

Bill froze. “How the hell did you manage that? I thought you didn’t know how to play poker?” Her provocative smile and shrug of her bare shoulders undid him. He picked up the shot glass in front of him, slammed down the whiskey and looked to Saul. Okay, Colonel, let’s see you beat three of a kind.” He laid down his clubs.

Saul fanned his cards out on the table. “Oh, the gods are kind, Admiral.” Bill stared at the two, three, four, five and six of diamonds. “A straight flush,” the Colonel said with a smile. “You lose, Old Man.”

Everyone laughed.

Except Bill.
