Sound, Light, Love
The sound of the heart monitor interrupts the sterile silence of sickbay. The light is harsh.
She isn’t alone. Colonel Tigh, Lee, Corporal Venner-they all stand with her at his bedside. She steals a glance in defiance. Her eyes follow the bandage down the length of his chest.
She wonders about his heart. Slow. Rhythmic. Steady. She wonders about hers. Fast. Fluttering. Erratic.
Laura Roslin is an educated woman-a teacher.
She understands the speed of sound-the rate of travel of a sound wave through an elastic medium. 768 miles per hour. It’s the beeping of the monitor.
She understands the speed of light-the speed at which light and all other electromagnetic radiation travels in vacuum. 186,000 miles per second. It’s a physical constant; the glare of the light overhead.
“Doc Cottle’s on his way. Be here any minute,” says Colonel Tigh.
She looks to Lee.
“He’s gonna be all right. You know that.” She needs to believe it as much as his son.
“Yeah, I know that,” Lee says quietly, not convinced.
Laura Roslin is an educated woman-a teacher.
She studies the fallen soldier before her.
What she doesn’t understand is the speed of love.
