Be Not Afraid

He took a final drag of his cigarette, crushed it out in a bedpan ashtray and waited.

“Do you know that tobacco smoke contains over 4000 chemical compounds, many of which are carcinogenic or otherwise toxic?”

Cottle flicked his lighter repeatedly.

“Yes, of course you do.” She sat in the chair beside his desk, back straight, legs crossed, hands folded neatly in her lap.  “I don’t smoke and I’m the one with cancer.”

“You did on New Caprica.”

“That wasn’t tobacco.”

He laughed.  “No, it definitely wasn’t.”

“You really should quit,” she said softly.

“Should, would, could, but won’t.  It gives me pleasure.  What gives you pleasure these days, Madame President?”

Laura shifted her position in the chair, re-crossed her legs, ran a hand through her hair, and took a deep breath.  It was an uncomfortable question.

“Living,” she said, but admitting that wasn’t her struggle.  Dying was. This wasn’t the ending she had chosen.  William Adama had unexpectedly re-written her story.  “The best laid plans of mice and men...” Her words trailed.

It would be a slow, gradual descent into hell.

“Why are you here?” Cottle asked.

Her eyes met his.

“I want to start taking the diloxin treatments.”
