You're not the only one who has said that to me (re Matt Smith). I actually loved Matt Smith, especially at the beginning. I thought The Beast Below was one of the very best Doctor Who episodes. Liked Rory and Amy and the dynamic with River Song, the lonely centurion, and reverse courtship. But I hated Matt Smith with Clara, thought it was an awful dynamic, and I loathed the final episode with Matt Smith. (Might have been a Xmas one, the one where he aged and was making toys.) Think Clara and Capaldi have been a GREAT partnership, suddenly Clara actually seemed liked a real human being, starting with her revulsion and shock at her doctor suddenly ageing, which is such a vital part of the human/Doctor thing (though usually it would be the other way round, with the human ageing, as in Sarah Jane Smith...)
But some of the Capaldi episodes I have found deeply tiresome and have even wandered off and done something else while the kids kept watching. The latest one shown here, the one where the Doctor is trapped in the castle endlessly repeating the same scenario with the hooded thing for billions of years until he gets through to Gallifrey... I thought it was the best episode I'd seen in a long time.
I've liked most of this season, though the one on one episode between the Doctor and Ashildr was tiresome. Last season, with the exception of a couple of episodes, I thought was terrific. And I agree that the relationship between Capaldi's Doctor and Clara works way better than between her and the Matt Smith version.
Sadly for me, though I liked Matt Smith fine in himself, I thought the writing during his tenure consistently let him down. And I didn't like Amy and Rory, and I didn't like River Song either.
So, in fact, there was not a lot there for me to like.
