Feels like Friday

Aug 11, 2011 09:34

But luckily, it's still Thursday. That means I have one more day than I thought I had to get through my list. =)

Woke up precisely at 5:59 this morning and enjoyed a moment of peace before the roofers and dogs started making noise.

I moved 10 boxes in this morning. There are less than 10 left in the summer kitchen, so the mission is nearly accomplished. Now to go through these boxes... Ugh!

Then doggies would not eat their breakfasts. So I said to hell with it and went to The Homestead for breakfast. Sandy made me scrambled eggs with local organic chicken eggs and bacon and a cinamon roll. And coffee, of course. Ringing Rocks blend. Organic and Free Trade. Yay! It's not my favourite Yrggachief but they rarely have Yrggachief in the pots. I buy it by the pound for at home.

As I sat outside, eating my breakfast, I marvelled at what a beautiful place I live in. The sun was glinting through the trees onto the Canal and the sound of the cicadas was like music. *sigh*

And then there are the people. Bucks County gets a bad rap for being white and wealthy, but that's not the side of Bucks I see. I see a table of five retirees by the window, one of them an African-American gentleman. Outside I hear the musical voice of a lady whose name I don't know but she calls everybody "darling" and her accents is from the West Indies. Just hearing her voice feels like sunlight. A lady who is part Lenape asks me for my name and then thanks me for the "gift". And all of them working people -- small business owners or local contractors or maintenance workers. Just not what you think of when people say "Bucks County". But this is my Bucks and it's beautiful. And they miss me when I don't come around for a few days. I love it.

Satelite radio, however, is defeated every time I go around a curve (which is a lot around here) and is supremely annoying. Sirius clearly needs more satelites!

Yesterday I had my mini-spa day at Artisans' Salon and Day Spa. It was AWESOME! I've had mini spa days at other local salons. But mostly they've just made me feel like they were poor imitations of the "real thing". I'd just lay there and think, "Yeah, it sure ain't Canyon Ranch!"

It started off with a facial by Donna. She put my head under a shade and looked at my skin with a scope that looked like one of the instruments at the optometrist's. She pronounced my skin "pretty good". I don't have too much sun damage and few blemishes. I told her it's been itchy and I've been breaking out in the recent heat, but she looked closely and said I must have just had a heat rash that's gone away because she couldn't see any breakouts. Yay! Then she rubbed some cranberry stuff on my skin that made me want pie. Then I got a steam treatment. Then there was something else and a mask that smelled like lemon meringue. Again, PIE!

She passed me off to Pat, the massage therapist, who asked me, "How deep do you want me to go." I said, "Until I yelp." So Pat spent 90 minutes giving me the workout of my life. My muscles are sore today, so I know it was good. She got all my trouble spots. No mercy.

Then it was time for lunch. I had a lovely wheat pita full of veggies in a cute little dining room. I read my book and chilled out because apparently we were ahead of schedule because I didn't need the between-appointments intervals that they schedule for typical come-and-go clients.

Then it was haircut time. For those of you with curly hair, you know that the cards are stacking against you when you go to the salon. If you're like the rest of us, you've had your hair pulled straight, cut to "fight" the curl, and otherwise punished while the person in the chair next to you gets her straight hair permed. It's insane the way they don't train cosmeticians how to deal with curly hair. And that's why the world gave us Curly Girls Ouidad. Ouidad is a life-long Curly Girl herself and set out to figure out a better way to deal with curly hair. She developed not only a whole line of styling products (everyone does that) but a new way of cutting hair that responds to the hair's individuality. All curly hair is not the same and you need to cut it according to its particular curl pattern.

So a Ouidad haircut is like no other cut you've ever had in your life. It takes a long time. And when you think she's done, she tends to go back and fuss some more until it's perfect.

Then she uses this gel that she literally soaks your hair with. But when it dries, you're perfect for days. And I mean, I can sleep on it, sweat in it, work in the barn, drive my car with the top down... and I still have NO FRIZZ! It's truly amazing.

Peggy, my stylist, is a what you'd probably call a militant Curly Girl. If you come to her wanting to know how to straighten your hair, she'll send you to someone else. She loves her curls and she loves yours too.

And she is GOOD at what she does. I convinced her I wanted to go a little shorter and she told me exactly how short she thought would still flatter my face (she's so honest!). And then she went for it. Always smiling and joking and "up", she cut my hair into a brilliant shape that made me feel 20 years younger!

Then she did my makeup. I ran out of facepowder recently, so I figured I'd have my makeup done and see what they came up with. Whenever I've had this done before, they usually put way too much makeup on me and I walk away with just a lipstick or something. But not Artisans! Lucky for me Peggy is not only a Curly Girl, but she has a similar skintone to mine and dark green eyes too! So her favourite colours for herself looked great on me. She dusted my face with some powder (no foundation! YAY!) and put some peachy colours on my lids and lips and I looked just "fresh". It was awesome.

Then Jessica tamed my brows and ripped the hair off my legs and I was done.

WOW! I felt like a million bucks. And I got home before any doggie accidents occurred. Even the old man held it!

When I got in my car, Modern English serenaded me with "Melt with You". And then on came the 12" version of "Rio" by Duran Duran. Ahhhh... Remember 12"-inches? This one had the bassline pushed to the front (as well as being longer than the album version). So the song with the greatest bassline in the world had a more obvious bassline than you usually hear. Totally awesome. It was only a shame I wasn't in my car. But my car isn't the one with the satelite radio. =)

This new haircut and makeup really is encourging me to dress up every day. I went to Mueller's for a snack last night and Heidi thought I dyed my hair. Nope! It's just well-saturated with moisture. I felt so pretty last night that I really wanted to go somewhere. I hope we made good money at Pennsic so that after the bills are paid, I can get me some new clothes.

(But my arms... The only thing I didn't like looking in the mirror today was my flabby arms. TRX band workout for me!)

This morning, Anna is here and I am determined to get this office in shape so she can vacuum in here before she leaves. She was absolutely shocked at how empty the Dressing Room looks. =)

Roofers are almost finished. As soon as they're out of here, I have to call the car people and get them to jump-start my car and get me a new battery. Then I can really go for a cruise!

But first, my office...

bucks county, escape from slobdom, the great organization
