G. B.: Everyone should have the option to purchase healthcare...even if it cuts the healthcare industry's profit margin. For all you ney-sayers aren't you the same ones that bitch about the government being inefficient? What the hell are you so scared about then since private corporations will have a much easier time running a successful business that will generate profits?

I support President Obama's three principles for real health care reform, and I call on Congress to enact a plan upholding them in 2009. Please share the this link with your friends and family.

I come from a country with this system and it sucks. all the good doctors become privatized and the "others" go and work for crappy hospitals where you have to wait in lines just to get a number of service. It may be days until you are actually seen. Why are people from Canada coming to the US for healthcare? It won't make it better. Instead, it will make it much worse and crappy for more people. It will multiply the number of people who are eligible for basic coverage while also including those who once had good coverage (since companies will no longer supply it) and make it a longer wait. AND it will only make the divide among rich and poor greater since privatized medicine will be available for the affluent. You want to have socialized medicine, move to Cuba. See how it works there also. As for me, keep it how it is. And this is coming from someone who is uninsured.

DOWN WITH THE RICH.

I think there is a gross misunderstanding of the "universal" healthcare...the opportunity to purchase healthcare from a non-profit, reliable, and (hopefully) uncorrupt provider should be the right of anyone and everyone. This is just what Obama's plan outlines, not a major overhaul of the entire medical system (with exception os some major defficincies) but instead wants another insurance provider to enter the marketplace. One that can not deny coverage based on pre-exisiting conditions and will be as affordable as possible through a business plan not driven by profit. The key goal of the administrations plan is to make the marketplace more competitive through another provider. Sure there may be a large influx of patients to doctors at first but wont this just make the demand for healthcare greater and therefore open doors to more high-paying jobs?

And if people are able to go to a doctor for preventative care, even as simple as an annual physical wont the health of our general population increase and reduce the chances of terrible diseases? True I've never had to live under a system of "universal" healthcare, but I can say that the current system is broken...reduced benefits, increased premiums, and employers sacking insurance all-together. All while insurance companies are still making big bucks. You may be uninsured and feel like the system is just fine, but I dont think that you've ever had to pay for insurance or had to support an ailing family member. I'm not saying everyone should be forced into buying health insurance, I'm just saying a low cost plan should be available to everyone. (and thanks for not just making ridiculous slams at Obama as a form of "debate" :))

I'm a political scientist garrett ;) ....i would never slam the president bc the responsibility of a nation does not rest in his hands alone. And actually in rebuttal, if you recall i was in a car accident in jan. i owe hospitals a ton of money bc i was laid off. that paired with the fact that i have a gastro disease that makes me break out in hives whenever i eat, i'd say i understand. it's just that everywhere that I have seen universal healthcare...there are always these huge promises of structure and finally equalizing the accessibility of health coverage but in my experience, whenever one gets sick or say pregnant, or has to do any procedure that counts, they never use the socialized doctors or facilities. Because the money to fund these facilities will be scarce bc of the state of the economy and overburden of resources puts a strain on the quality of social medicine. so...it ends up costing more bc you end up shelling the additional bucks to go to a private hospital.

let's just say this: if what obama proposes actually comes to pass and isn't just structurally sound but feasible in the long run...then it will be good. But I am a very big skeptic. I think it's irresponsible to say "down with the rich" bc again, that is not the issue. like i said, privatization of medicine will create another rich/poor gap. In the end...I'm pulling for obama and his administration bc I'm pulling for America, and i want to believe in a positive outcome.

Anybody bashing the canadian healthcare system needs to stop drinking the kool-aid fed to them by loony republicans who have the insurance lobbyists stuffing their pockets with money. We all have access to good healthcare, our life expectancy is 3 years longer than than the US and infant mortality in Canada is half what the US has (you guys are even below friggin Morocco!). And nobody goes bankrupt from medical bills, or worries about switching jobs because the job they want to jump to has a worse medical plan than the one they are at. There is not one canadian that would change plans with an american in light of all that crap that americans have to deal with with their HMOs....

What? Man, double-fuck the rich. Extra hard, and without any lubricant, whatsoever... not even spit. Because they've been fucking with our poor asses for generations. We can tax them or we can guillotine them, the choice is theirs. I want fucking healthcare, and I don't want to have to pay $60,000 because I wouldn't suck some insurance company's dick. If we can afford to throw billions of dollars into an illegal war in order to subsidize no-bid contracts for "our" business buddies, and we can throw trillions at Wall Street white collar mafia because they go to the same cocktail parties as our representation, then we can afford to insure 42 million Americans with some sort of coverage that resembles Medicare, at least. Don't tell me it's about quality of care when you and I and everyone talking about this right now knows it's about the money that's buying off Congresscritters from both parties one by one.

i agree andrew i am glad you finally said that in a well thought out manner this time ;). i doubt it will happen in this administration maybe if he gets re-elcted. like i said, i owe tons of money bc i lost my insurance after i got laid off. and still, i have issues with universal coverage. it's a good debate, but not without its flaws on both sides. i just like to evoke thought on either side of the issue.
