Numero Dos Dos

I prepared a speech for today, in the case that Joey might have mentioned to our ENG 123 class that today is my birthday.
Thank you. Thank you. I'm humbled to be recognized like this today. Now, I'm not sure that I deserve this, but thank you. It means a lot to me.

I wrote something, and I'd like to share it with all of you.

As I'm sure you're all aware, this past Saturday, the Ohio State Buckeyes played the Michigan Wolverines in a classic clash of college football titans. I was born 22 years ago, today, in Warren, Ohio. And I've lived my whole life a son of Ohio. And I've been bred a Buckeye, even though I go to school here, at Miami.

Three days after I was born, a Friday, my mom held me in her hospital bed and accepted visitors and well-wishers in and out. The following day, I went home and my new family threw an OSU-UM party. Anyway, at the hospital that Friday, her principal, Cliff Johnson, and his wife, Vicki, entered her room and exchanged pleasantries and gave her a gift. She opened it, only to discover that under all the wrapping paper was a University of Michigan onesy.

And my mom screamed. Maybe it was more a shriek. In any event, it was a blood-curdling outburst, and immediately, the nursing staff and a doctor who was passing her room ran in, asking what was wrong. "Is something the matter with you?" "Is your baby ok?" "What's wrong?"

Mom, collected but visibly upset, lifted the onesy into the air for everyone to see, and then said, as if it needed explanation, "They got my son a fucking Michigan onesy!"

And with that in my blood, I thank you all for recognizing my birthday today. And I thank you for recognizing with me that the Ohio State Buckeyes are this year's Big Ten champs, outright, for the second time in my life. And I'll see you all at the Rose Bowl.

Thank you.

Thank you.
