So, this is a video I made for my English 212 class. I put it up on Youtube . . . only, I need to explain my logic for the video, and the description thingy won't let me. So here it is!!

This is a video I did for my English 212 class-Digital Writing. In that class, we learned about something called “electracy.” Electracy is the “the kind of “literacy” or skill and facility necessary to exploit the full communicative potential of new electronic media such as
multimedia,
hypermedia,
social software, and
virtual worlds.” (Wikipedia) Basically, it means that it is the new method by which the world had started learning-particularly the younger generation-in the way the internet has become a constant exchange of information and culture. Knowledge is no longer a luxury, but a constant, eternal conversation that’s executed through digital media; blogs, forums, video, chatrooms, online art websites, social networking sites. You can create almost ANYTHING using technology, upload it online, and it’s out there.
Strangely enough, I’ve been practicing electracy for the past six months, even before I arrived in this class. Why? I’ve been a part of the fandom for the anime/manga series Soul Eater. This fandom I find is most active on FanFiction.net, LiveJournal, deviantART, and YouTube, though there are many other pocket-sites on which fans will reside. The fandom site I participate most in is FanFiction.net. There, my fellow otaku and I discuss everything from favorite pairings to the latest manga chapter to the many pop, mythological, and historical references that is contained in this series. Oh, yes, the names of characters and places, ideas, and concepts of Soul Eater is based almost entirely on history, mythology, and pop culture. A prime example; the character Death the Kid’s name is referenced from “Billy the Kid,” (he’s also known as Henry McCarty) a famous gunfighter from the Old West, a 19th century American frontier outlaw. And, Kid is indeed a gunman, in the way he wields dual-pistols, and upside-down, to boot. If there’s any series that could be better known for practicing electracy, it would be Soul Eater.
So, the first part is the introduction to what Soul Eater is all about, and the fact that it revolves around the Shinigami Buki Shokunin Senom, or Shibusen, as well as the all-around AWESOME!factor of the series, and the popularity of it, in the fandom world. In the quotes, I also played with the concept of the SOUL, and madness and insanity, which are both major thematic elements in the series. The soul is the energy, or power source in the series, and it is through the soul that one grows. Thus, madness and insanity are bad-they are corrupters of the soul, and it is against these forces that the protagonists of Soul Eater work. The Soul Eater fandom consists of people from every walk of life you can possibly think of. Through this fandom, I have friends everywhere from the USA East Coast where I live, to Finland to China. Every nationality under the sun is probably represented in this fandom. Soul Eater fans are often passionate, as well as loyal to their friends in SE-it’s a very tight-knit group. And, we exchange every type of media imaginable. Written word in the form of online stories and discussion, art in the form of fanart distribution and contribution, video in the form of Anime Music Videos, tributes, and parodies. This exchange is happening all day, every day, as electracy does.
The second part, the “Soul Resonance” thingy, is about the connection between the power-up in the series, known as “Soul Resonance,” in connection with sound and music. It is a common fan theory that Soul Resonance produces a sound, which can only be heard by those participating in the Resonance. It’s explained pretty well in the video. But it’s basically playing with the fact that Soul Resonance plays one of the most important roles in Soul Eater, and the role it plays in the other aspects of the series. A perfect example is the character Soul’s Piano Chain Resonance. Soul manifests the move Chain Resonance (or Group Resonance-basically, Resonance between more people than just the meister and weapon) between the seven main characters by playing the piano. The music of the piano directs the energy and induces it to become more powerful-thus it gives Soul’s team unprecedented power. Also, the more important, underlying factor, is the source of the Soul Resonance-the relationship between Meister and Weapon.
This is what the last part is about. This is perhaps the most important part of the entire series. The relationships between characters and human interactions are the-dare I say it-heart and SOUL of Soul Eater. This is what makes this series unique from other shonen, I think, is the absolutely blatant humanity of the characters, and the friendships (and maybe more) between them. This is where most of the primary interest lies in this series, and this is where you see the characters grow the most. Thus, the characters do not grow as fighters, until they grow as people, first. It’s the one wild card that makes Soul Eater-Soul Eater, and is the main reason why I (and I’m sure many other fans will agree) love this series.
I used a SoulxMaka vid by MentalProdigy for the credits. :3 I’ve been writing so many KidxMaka fanfics, and drawing so much MaKi art, that I’m in SoKa withdrawal. Not that I don’t love MaKi just as much. >.<
