The Girl

Feb 01, 2009 03:17

The girl walks home in the waning hours of the night. Too stubborn to call a cab, she is walking to the closest bus stop that will take her home. It’s late, but not late enough that the buses aren’t running any more. As she continues to walk towards her goal, she flinches at the sound of her high heels striking the sidewalk. She knows that it would have been safer for her to call the cab from the bar that she just left, but as poor as she is, she’d rather walk the extra blocks than spend the money on a cab.

But, it’s so cold. Her skirt barely reaches her knees and she’s beginning to regret dressing up. The wind cuts through her jacket again, and she’s just glad that she brought her good gloves with her, the ones that cover her wrists and everything.

The block that she’s walking through is very quiet, almost too quiet. There isn’t one door or place that is open now. If anything was to happen, she knows that she is on her own. Streetlights shine on patches of the sidewalk that she travels past. However, there are still dark areas that she watches closely, wary of any sudden movements or shadows that may come near her.

Now, she’s close to the block where she’s supposed to turn and go west. At least, she thinks this is where she’s supposed to turn. Both of the other times that she’s made this trip, she was walking with guys that knew exactly where to go. This is the first time she’s made it a solo trip.

Shit! Is that- Fuck! It’s the bus she needs. The girl starts to run, but she’s wearing heels and her pace is slowed. Did the driver see her in time? Dammit, he’s not going to stop! Wait, wait, yes!! He’s stopped. The girl picks up her pace and runs across the intersection and climbs onto the bus. Stammering out her thanks, the girl walks towards a back seat. She slumps into the seat, not caring who sees her. There’s no one to impress on this bus, and the girl just leans back in her seat and puts on her iPod. She’s done for the night, and she’s going home. To hell with it.
