Monday is just another Saturday

Especially when you work most of Saturday. Either I can't concentrate well enough at work on Friday (well, Thursday too), I can't get the DBAs to give me the time of day on those days (also possible), or everyone is just too damned busy at work. We're going full steam into this ELI conversion and it is painful. Too few of us doing too much work ( Read more... )

Hang in there.

Man, I wanna do another murder mystery party. This is what comes of watching "Clue" several hundred times as a kid.

Clue is a FANTASTIC movie. It should be watched that many times.

Have you seen the DVD? You can set it to play all the endings, like the VHS, or pick a single, random ending, like when it was released theatrically.

Question about Merlin anonymous March 19 2007, 21:28:30 UTC
I am Mary Lee, the owner of Dinner and a Murder Mystery Games. Last night I received the rudest email from a guy who said he had just attended an Immortal Murders party of ours and played the character of Merlin. He was ranting about implied consent and that everyone was obnoxious to him. In 5 years I have never had this complaint before. Our parties are supposed to be all in fun and obviously this guy was offended by everything and took it all personal. We were wondering if he was just possibly a negative person to begin with and that no one at the party liked him ( ... )

Reading referral links? Crazy response!

Well, it's possible that this guy was our Merlin. I don't think many people at the party knew him, and he was playing his character as a jerk. It made it easier to pin the murder on him because he was already acting standoffish.

Perhaps the character was not written that way, but it was certainly played that way. Unfortunately, most people did not have the meta-information about who he really was - perhaps he was just a brilliant actor!

Not sure where the implied consent is coming from. King Oberon did banish him from the kitchen at one point for hitting on Nineve. Merlin did leave early, though I thought it was because the party started late.

Sorry if I can't confirm more and you probably can't give out further information. In general, it was fun, but I enjoy role-playing. Plus, I got to be the murderer without even doing anything.

I would say that it was most likely him. He said that he was a friend of a friend of the host. That implies he wasn't well known. To explain the implied consent thing I will quote his message here:

I just participated in one of your games at a friend-of-a-friend's party. It was the "Immortal Annual Costume Ball" game, and I was assigned the role of Merlin by the host. I don't know what sort of set-up accompanies this game, but whenever playing such a game, I feel the idea of informed consent is rather crucial. I did read the note in the pamphlet, and I don't take things personally as a rule. But three hours of being viciously hated by everyone at the party was not my idea of a good time. I did not feel adequately informed as to the actions surrounding my character to know the evening would be so...obnoxious. My comment to you is this: to avoid such misunderstandings in the future, the game designers might make note for the host. The note should state that the Merlin character (who is the dupe of everyone else in the game; more of a ( ... )

Oh & we do not tell Merlin to hit on Nineve. We just tell him that he is in love with her. If he acts like a jerk that is his own doing. That character was not created that way and even if he were, people are able to create their characters personality how they see fit. Maybe someones character is a jerk, but you could play him as a friendly jerk. We do not encourage people to be mean at all. We want everyone to laugh and have fun, not be offended!
