Japan Trip: Adventures in the Largo - Day Eight

Nov 02, 2006 07:20

I spent the beginning of the day hanging out while Dan did some errands on his day off.

After a lunch of pork cutlets and sauce (very excellent), we headed off into the north. Our first stop was the Bamboo Doll Village. It was another place where local craftsmen made crazy local cultural artifacts. Some of the dolls had so much bamboo hair they needed supports to keep themselves upright.

As we were leaving, I wanted a drink so I hit the vending machine. They had what looked like a Kit Kat drink, so I grabbed it. Little did I know that it was really just 6 individual Kit Kats in a stylish jar. So I also got a Soba Tea.

We headed out along some back country roads to the cliffs of Tojinbo and the isle of Oshima. Apparently the cliffs are famous for their suicides and the corpses wash up on the shores of Oshima. We didn't see any suicides or ghosts, but we did get to hang out and watch and awesome sunset over the Sea of Japan.

We came back, through terrible afternoon traffic, and went to Mitsuko's house to get my newly engraved knife. On the way out, the Largo no longer did anything in reverse. So that sort of killed the evening. Stupid car. No idea what is wrong, but the car certainly does not back up.

I pushed him out of the driveway and we made our way, half an hour late, to a Brazillian restaurant for steak sandwiches. Not very Japanese, unless you consider the generation ago's emigration from Japan to Brazil and this generations immigration back.

We canceled the karaoke idea for the evening, both on account of the car and that only one person had responded, and returned to Dan's for some serious Super Smash Brothers action. I used to be good at that game, but now I consistently come in last.

And I'm caught up! Dan's playing The Two Thrones and we're hanging out. We'll see what happens tomorrow without a fully functional car.
