I played a bit of the D&D Online Stress Test Beta over the weekend. In and amongst the other work and play I was up to. In general, I think it can be a great game. However, as it stands now, I don't see how it can be great at release (Feb. 2).
I really enjoyed the combat system, stat/skill system, and how they've translated various feats from table top to video game. The game looks very pretty as well. Finding pick-up groups was relatively painless, though there were the occasional annoying asshats that you find in any pick-up group.
The game features in-game voice, but as it is currently implemented it is worthless. At max gain, it is significantly quieter than the rest of the game sounds. Teamspeak works much better.
Additionally, it plays more like Diablo or Guild Wars rather than World of Warcraft or City of Heroes. Makes it hard to justify the price of buying the discs and paying a subscription fee.
All told, I'll probably watch reviews and buy it a few months after launch. If I have friends who are planning on playing it at a similar rate.
djcrowley, any comments? Or are you NDAed?
