Pigs in Heaven: a continuation of The Bean Trees. A good read even if you haven't read Trees. Kingsolver has way of discribing things in a humorous and familiar way. She talks as if she's a relative.
Plot: (From the Bean Trees)Taylor, a young and spunky girl from the mid-west takes a roadtrip to escape teen pregnancy and small-town life, on the way, she is given an abused indian child. Completely taken aback, she doesn't know what to do, but accepts the child, which needs a lot of love. This child is Turtle. In Pigs in Heaven, a young, intelligent female lawyer working on behalf of the cherokee nation, comes to reclaim Turtle. Scared to death she will lose her child, Taylor flees to California, leaving her hard-rock but tender-hearted boyfriend to fall on hard time. Eventually she must return to the nation with the help of her liberal mother who just can't seem to keep a husband.
3 out of 5
Pros: It's set in Tucson, where Kingsolver lives. There's a unconventional sex scene which definitely could be described in greater detail. Her style is unique, her descriptions vivid.
Cons: The ending seems like she cheated. It's too fast and leaves a lot of story left to tell. Not that I'm a fan of a perfect ending, I just feel like she rushed it, so people would be left wanting more and they'd be convinced it was a better book than it actually was.
I'd suggest reading The Bean Trees over this book anyday.
