Went to see
Rock it! today ^^
In case you don't know it, it's a German musical movie, kinda like a mix between High School Musical and Fame and the likes. (
Plot goes here, in German)
So... we had seen the trailer for the movie a few months ago and thought that we wanted to give it a try. For the record, this is the first German musical movie in as far as I can remember. There used to be movies like that before, but I'm afraid that was in the 1950s...
As we can't compare it with any other German movies, the only chance is to compare it with American movies. And well, "Rock it" actually has a quite American flair, with some German aspects. It was a bit strange to watch a movie of this kind completely in German, but not bad, not BAD.
The positive remarks:
Music-wise: German rock and it worked, thought it needed some adjusting for the usual "it's a musical and the songs will be in English" thought, which I'm used too. Personally, I think I liked about 50% of the songs quite some, the rest was okay-ish...
Not sure if I'd buy the CD, but I wouldn't turn the radio off <-- something like that ^^;;;
The outfits of the girls looked cool and the one stunt they had in the movie, made us all go "cool + LOL" at the same time.
On to the actors: Of course the older actors with more experience did a better job than the "kids", but the younger generation didn't disappoint as a whole. Only one or two of them made me go "-.-;;;;"
Especially the Italian parents of that one girl were just GREAT. And said girl had a voice worth a million. She was singing one classic opera and everybody was sitting there with teary eyes. People in the audience and the people on screen too.
Petra Nadolny (as Mrs. Bock aka Mrs. Spock, Bella Bock <-- the Italian dad had fun playing with the name ^^;;)... eh... yeah... Petra Nadolny, I remember her from "Switch!" and simply couldn't take her role serious. I doubt she did either ^^;;
Same goes for Markus Maria Profitlich as facility manager *g*
Now the not so good points:
Plot-wise it was foreseeable, but well...
The "evil" main character (Betty) was very much like HSM's Sharpey Evans, sadly without her charming points -.-;;; (or wait, in the first movie Sharpey was just a bitch? too long ago)
Some (maybe two or three) scenes could have been shortened a bit and the dance moves looked very American or as if they had gotten the choreographer from Britney Spears ^^;;;
I'm not sure if a few songs were written in English and then translated into German, but it felt like that (same as some NEWS songs get written in English and then translated into Japanese). Maybe, because there aren't German song writers for this kind of movie/music?
Verdict:
If you live in a German speaking country and they show this movie in a cinema near you AND you like musicals/music movies, give it a try. I didn't feel like "I want my money back" and it's surely something we haven't had in ages in the German speaking world.
