GIANT UPDATE

Feb 27, 2007 21:05

Ok. Me, and, despite raging cases of the flu, my girl and my brother, got the RecNo Mardi Gras float finished. On game day, many wonderful people showed up to don fake armor and plastic weapons and march down Church Street. It was loads of fun. Because this is Burlington VT and not New Orleans, Mardi Gras VT style is a pretty kid-friendly affair. The floats are usually kinda tame, and needless to say nobody goes topless when it's 15 degrees out*. Recycle North's float theme was Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome. We tried to stay fairly light-hearted, but when you create a float based on a desert warrior's journey in a post-apocolyptic dystopia, it doesn't come off too cutesy. Soooooo.... I have photos up at Flickr. Other people do, too. My Flickr ID is Sir Piginous. There are other pics too, by other people. Type in "Burlington Mardi Gras" and awesome pictures of the Thunderdome float will pop up. Here's a link.

Now I can finally rest, sort of. We have a lot of clean-up to do, and I need to figure out where to store our 6-foot tall Masterblaster dummy. Anybody want him? He won't fit in our house, or studio.

*footnote! News reports have it that the real-deal New Orleans Mardi Gras was bitterly cold. "Dressing in layers is the key", said one parade marcher, who was braving the 40-degree temperatures. My studiomate, who is a Louisiana native, wasn't too approving of Burlington's descision to co-opt Mardi Gras and its rich traditions. Other people aren't, either. I know it's a pale imitation, but screw all y'all. Magic Hat could call it something else, like "Vermont Winter Festival", but it wouldn't draw as big a crowd, and wouldn't raise half as much money for the Women's Rape Crisis Center.
Plus, the damn beads are made by slave laborers in China... where's the freakin' rich tradition there? I know I'm being grumpy. I have PMS and my woolen underwear is itchy.
