"She's All that" by Karen

To look at her she's nothing more than a slip of a girl and as anyone who expects to make a dent in our society knows girls don't count for much even if this girl is the daughter of Warlord Shank. That alone makes her someone but not enough of a someone to make a difference.

I would never go so far as to say any of the above to her face mostly because I know who how tongues would wag aboard this ship and eventually that kind of rumor-mongering had a way of getting back to the ones you gossiped about, and the Spung way of mind the consequences tended to verge on the dire side; if it didn't get you demoted it sure as hell would have gotten you killed. So I held my tongue and kept my thoughts to myself.

Still, if one had spent any amount of time in the company of either father or daughter you would have picked up on their unique if somewhat strained relationship.

She had guts, for a girl, I mean.

So what if she could pick up bits and pieces of what was to come and that in itself made her presence aboard a Spung kill-cruiser invaluable.

She also had the guts to stand up and defy her father on more than one occasion. The girl had more than guts, more than insight; she had a presence. As much as I might hate to admit I actually was starting to admire the kid.

Now take Warlord Shank's latest obsession: chasing off into far reaches of space in order to acquire a dubious prize, an alien ship and its technology and its crew of misfit alien children and two adults from the Star Dogs? I mean, really, there had to be more important things for us to be doing, right? But I had been serving long enough under the command of Warlord Shank to know better than to question his orders especially once he had latched onto an goal and that goal had subsequently become a full-blown obsession.

Elmira did question, and frequently.

As much as I reasonably know that I should not be feeling the way I did about her, as much as I realized it would much as my life as my life was worth, I began think seriously about Elmira; her courage as much as well, her attractiveness. In the back of my mind I thought, "Bully for you, Chang, and even it did work out, what then? You're nothing but an enlisted man, and and even if she would have you, she's royalty and she's got a mind of her own. It would never work out.'
