Witch Hunter Robin: Changing His Mind (PG)

Oct 12, 2009 19:39

Summary: Amon is not exactly fond of amusement parks.
Notes: Picking back up with NENN for October 12th, with all due apologies to Six Flags New England, which has been pressed into service as my model yet again, and the friends who were indeed dancing to the piped-in music in the line for the Mind Eraser.

CHANGING HIS MIND ERASER
*
Crowds aren't safe.

Years of hunting have drilled that into Amon. At best, crowds mean a much higher chance of losing the subject. At worst...more than a few Witches, realizing that they were pursued, have panicked and started to strike out at anyone nearby.

These days, they're the hunted, not the hunter, and the danger is even greater. Anyone could be hiding in a crowd. Crowds could turn against them. And a crowded line, like this one, is even worse: there's no place to run.

Robin, who's been watching the people ahead of them dance to the piped-in music, looks back over her shoulder at him as if she's aware of how tense he's gotten. "Not too much longer," she says.

"Mmm," Amon says. There's a sign above the dancing people that says 30 MINUTES TO THE MIND ERASER!

Robin frowns, and at first Amon thinks she noticed the sign as well. Instead she says, "We don't have to go on it if you'd rather not."

"We should be all right," Amon says, wearily repeating back to her the argument she used to get him to come here in the first place. "There's no reason they should look for us here."

"Hmph," Robin says, with a small pout, and turns away from him again.

In the silence, Amon catches himself actually listening to the piped-in music. It's American pop, which means that even the words he understands don't make sense. But at least it's happy and bouncy and not totally annoying, at least if you haven't been trapped, standing in a line winding back and forth, listening to nothing else, for half an hour so far.

"We could go get a Flash Pass," Robin says suddenly in English.

"What?"

"I have a little extra money. And it would get us out of the line." At Amon's glare -- they'd decided against it earlier on grounds that they didn't have much money -- she shrugs. "And maybe then you'd have fun."

"I'm not the roller coaster type," Amon mutters. But he follows Robin as she ducks through the fences that pen them in, and heads for the sales office to get that Flash Pass.
