The Pretender: Method of Resurrecting Canonically Dead Characters #24 (PG)

Apr 26, 2009 09:08

Summary: In which Kyle is a vampire, of the non-sparkly variety.
Notes: So thesilentpoet is depressed over the book she's reading, and demands fluff. I'm not sure what it says about us that 'fucked-up vampiric implied smut' works for fluff, but I'm going to try not to think about it.

METHOD OF RESURRECTING CANONICALLY DEAD CHARACTERS #24
*
When Jarod stumbled into his hotel room that night, the last thing he expected was to see Kyle sitting on the bed, watching TV. Jarod stood there and blinked at Kyle for a long moment, more than long enough for Kyle to turn off the TV and look over at him.

"You look like you've seen a ghost," Kyle said, with that faint not-quite-a-smile of his.

"You're dead," Jarod said blankly.

"Mmm."

"I had to -- they took out your heart and gave it to that little boy."

"Made it rather awkward to get here," Kyle agreed.

Jarod looked back over his shoulder, and considered whether to go get the hotel clerk, just to check. No. Even if the Center hadn't been so close on their trail, this was Kyle. Maybe. Unless he was a hallucination.

"I'm not a ghost," Kyle said, as if he'd read Jarod's mind.

"Then I'm dreaming you."

"Not that either." Kyle's not-quite-a-smile widened. "Although I am dead."

"That makes no sense."

"It makes more sense than asking you to believe in ghosts. Come here, big brother."

Jarod found himself moving forward, obeying Kyle's beckoning fingers. He forced himself to stop. "What are you? A zombie?"

"No. I woke up on my own." Kyle beckoned again.

"A --" What else could die, but not die? He'd learned all sorts of ordinary daily things since his escape, but hadn't bothered with horror stories. "A vampire?"

"Possibly. I'm not a werewolf."

Jarod took a wary step forward, then another. "I thought vampires had to be invited in."

"It's a hotel room, Jarod. Not a house." Kyle's smile widened once more, and if Jarod looked closely, he could see what looked like lengthened canines. "And it's you. You're part of me."

"Kyle --"

"You're mine," Kyle said, and when had Jarod gotten this close to the bed? "And you'll stay that way."

Jarod sat down on the bed, not sure if this movement, this pull toward Kyle, was some sort of compulsion or his own will. He had to do something, to say something. It couldn't be this easy. "Kyle, this is a bad --"

"No worse than letting me go in the first place, big brother," Kyle murmured, and bit down.
