Imagine a room. At the center of the room is a table with a candle on it, weak and wavering, just enough to give you the outline of the room and its furniture. Enough, let's say, to cross the room without stubbing your toes. Usually.
Most people wouldn't care. They don't need anything more than to cross the room without stubbing their toes. But there may be more in that room than furniture. There may be a door open that shouldn't be. There may be a priceless statue, hidden in the shadows. Perhaps you simply want to see details of the room or the furniture.
Now imagine you have a flashlight. Not a very powerful one, but enough to show if the door is open. If you hold it close, you can see the details of the furniture. And if you are not careful with it, anyone else in the room can see you.
Oh yes. There have been times when I have reached out into the darkness, and felt something take hold of my wrists and pull me in.
But that's why they send us in pairs. Even if I stumble in the darkness, Steel is there to help pull me out. And when I reach out, it is his hand that reaches back. He never hesitates. He's not the sort.
It's sweet, really. But you don't need to tell him I said so.
