You're a great writer (I absolutely love your last two stories and checked for updates everyday!), and this is certainly not a personal attack on you. You have a right to write whatever story you want, however you want, just like you don't have to always like Kurt. And you're right, Kurt is often bitchy, selfish, arrogant, and manipulative.
But it disturbs me when people say Dave can do better, that Kurt isn't good enough for him.
Dave was cruel to Kurt. He was physically violent with him, he was downright creepy in that scene in Furt, and he threatened to kill him (and yes, I don't think he seriously meant it either, but how can anyone blame Kurt for being terrified?!).
Kurt can be bitchy and manipulative, and Dave can be violent and aggressive. Both have been selfish and arrogant.
Dave has changed, though. He went from bullying Kurt relentlessly to tearfully apologizing and protecting him in the hallways (sure, Santana blackmailed him, but you can tell he was taking his job seriously for Kurt.) But just like Dave has grown over the course of Season 2, I think Kurt has, too. He isn't perfect, he isn't a saint, but I think Season 3 especially has shown new growth and maturity in him (unlike, say, Rachel.) I feel like Kurt, though initially wanting to win class president just to add something to his college applications, is now actually wanting to win so he can help people. People like Dave. And so far he is being very supportive to Blaine, despite losing the part he so desperately wanted to him.
They both still have a lot of growing to do, though. And who knows? In the future, maybe Dave can do better than Kurt. Maybe Kurt can do better than Dave. At this point, we don't really know.
And yes, I'm a Kurt fan, so I'm incredibly biased. But I'm also a Dave fan. And since I have to constantly defend Dave to other Kurt fans who don't ship Kurtofsky, it's hard having to defend Kurt to Dave fans. Dave fans, of all people, should know how to forgive characters for their past mistakes, to look for the good in them.
Sorry for the essay! Once again, this is not a personal attack on you, or my way of trying to start an argument. You're a very talented writer, I adore your stories, and you're entitled to your opinions, whatever those may be. I just needed to get this off my chest.

I know what you mean!! Totally. In this one-shot...I've jumped ahead, maybe as much as six months. I mention Dave came out and months after that, so maybe in the winter/early spring...this takes place. In this story, there has been time for Dave to make amends and to prove that he's changed. He has matured and he's risen back to the top of McKinley's social standings because of his general awesome-ness and like-ability...not through force and not by reverting to his old ways.
So the fact that Kurt has not come any closer to really getting past the bullying and the death threat and the Karofsky that USED TO BE...Dave finally realizes that he needs to stop pining after the DREAM of Kurt Hummel because he was honestly in love with an image. We've all done that. Fallen in love with what we think someone is...until we meet them or get to know them in real life. Not the same person and you feel like you made this huge mistake. I have at least...lol.
So I totally get what you're saying. This fic doesn't take place next week. Maybe March. Maybe never. Maybe Kurt and Dave both grow up and decide to put all the bullying and negativity behind them and move forward. Maybe they fall in love, maybe they become great friends. Maybe they just peacefully co-exist and that's as good as its gonna get. In this little one-shot, Kurt stays a bitch and Dave moves on. Not at all what I want RIB to do to me or my fellow pirates. Like NO, please don't think I want this. At all.
But I do thank you for commenting and I totally get what you're saying. Dave would be the first one to forgive and forget. And a Dave fan too...Pirates are fucking awesome people, imo! Thanks!!

I guess after reading your summary and then some of the comments (though this isn't a personal attack on them, either), it kind of got to me, so I quickly wrote a long comment instead of thinking it through a little better.
If Dave comes out on the show, proves himself to be an amazing guy (which I think he already has to Kurt), and Kurt still won't forget... well, Dave will definitely deserve someone better. But I hope that if it comes to that, Kurt will embrace him. I think his forgiveness and kindess to Dave in Prom Queen is evidence of that, but you never know when RIB is concerned, lol.
And yes, Pirates are wonderful! And I can't wait for more stories by you <3

I like writing future fics, well...more future than this...because as the writer you have license to create history, a backstory. While this is future, there may not have been enough time to accomplish what I feel went down. The follow-up explains it better but I know you're going spoiler-free. To be honest, the sequel is a total about-face and rather unrealistic, compared to this. But anyway. I felt I just had to end with some lip/tongue action...I need it to live.
Thanks again, love the comment. I had no idea this would generate as much passion for both our boys as it has. But if Glee fans are anything, they're passionate!! Crazy, hell yeah...but passionately crazy.

and bro, ND and Blaine. Dave.. he's got so much to lose so when he comes out and gets a boyfriend, he'd be better adjusted. But we'll see how it plays out...

I agree that Dave will most likely have it harder in a lot of areas, especially with his friends. It's hard to say how much he has to lose, though, when we barely know anything about his home life. His father seemed like he'd be accepting, but you never know. I just hope that we get to see Dave come out on the show and receive support from people besides Kurt. I love fics where Azimio accepts him, but that doesn't always happen in reality, of course. But like you said, we'll see what happens :]
