Blaine finally found Kurt. Twenty minutes later.
He spotted him sitting on a bench outside the same Gap Store where he’d last seen him.
But this was not the same Kurt.
He was swinging his crossed leg excitedly as he talked on his phone. Blaine’s eyes widened as he walked closer. Kurt wore a striped green cardigan, a scarf around his neck and as Blaine finally reached him, standing just a few feet outside Kurt’s vision, he could see the broach pinned to Kurt’s chest.
Kurt was engrossed in animated conversation with lord knows who. Laughing and chatting away while completely ignoring Blaine standing next to him.
Blaine could feel the power slipping away. His palms began to sweat. His throat went dry.
“Oh. Guess who just showed up.” Kurt glanced at Blaine sideways taking a long drag on the straw of his double chocolate chip frappaccino. “Yeah. I know right? Well. I guess I should let you go, girl. Love you, see you soon.”
Kurt slipped his phone into his pocket and looked at Blaine, cocking his head slightly and raising one eyebrow questioningly.
“Kurt?” Blaine began, his voice shaky. “I called you. Why didn’t you pick up?”
“Yeah. About that.” Kurt turned his attention to his sweater, picking off an invisible piece of fuzz and tugging at the sleeve hem. “This mall has the most horrendous cellphone reception.”
“But you were just talking….on your….Kurt?” he stopped talking and looked around. “Where are all the clothes you bought?”
“Oh, right. You missed that part. I took them back.” Kurt shrugged his shoulders nonchalantly. “I mean, I appreciate you trying to help but it’s obvious our tastes are just too different.”
Blaine was speechless. He sat down on the bench next to Kurt. He opened his mouth to speak but shut it again. Kurt chuckled. “Was there something you wanted to say, Blaine?”
What’s wrong with me, he screamed at himself. Don’t fuck this up. I’ve got to salvage this, fix it, get it back. Tell him what he wants to hear and bring him back. He was so close already….he can still be my pet. Get your head back in the game, Blaine, dammit.
Blaine looked down, regained his composure and looked up at Kurt. “Yes, there was.” Blaine reached down, took Kurt’s hand and looked deep into Kurt’s eyes. “I was worried about you. I didn’t know where you were and I panicked.” His voice was soothing and calm. His thumb caressed the top of Kurt’s hand as he held it gently. “I couldn’t stop thinking about how miserable I’d be if anything happened to you, Kurt.”
Kurt stared blankly into Blaine’s eyes. He didn’t reply. He didn’t respond.
“It made me realize how I really feel about you. How much I need you, Kurt.” Blaine pulled Kurt’s hand to his mouth and kissed it gently, never breaking his gaze. He broke out the award-winning smile as he continued, “It’s almost Valentine’s Day, Kurt. You know what that means, don’t you? I…I want you to be mine. We can make it official, everyone would know. You would belong to me.” Blaine kissed Kurt’s hand again, smiling, “Would you like that, Kurt?”
Kurt took another long drag on his frozen coffee and blinked. “Ummm….no thanks.”
“Wh-what?” Blaine stammered. “What do you mean, no thanks?” Blaine flustered. This can’t be happening, it can’t!
“I mean, I don’t want to belong to anybody. Thanks. That was really sweet what you just said. But I think maybe we should just stay friends.” Kurt wiggled his hand out of Blaine’s and moved it to his shoulder, patting it in the most condescending way he could.
“Kurt. What happened to you? Why are you acting like this?”
“I hit my head.” Kurt answered with a smile. “And it felt amazing!” He rolled his eyes and shrugged his shoulders. He ignored Blaine’s stunned look and reached for his vibrating phone instead. He stared at the screen, laughed and began typing a text message in response. “Well, hey, I gotta go.” He stood and gathered his coat and his single Forever 21 bag. “Mercedes is picking me up. I’m gonna stay at her house tonight.”
Blaine couldn’t speak. He couldn’t move.
“Are you gonna be ok?” Kurt tried not to laugh as he stood over the bewildered boy. “Hey, don’t worry, I’ll see you at school Monday.” Then with a smirk he added, “Would you like that, Blaine?”
