Well, I've only read up to ch.19, but hopefully I'm not too misinformed.
Why is Karoku's head and body bandaged?
It's possible he fought with a member of Circus and that doesn't have to make him good or bad as his opponent could have been corrupt. The bracelet may have been dropped by said assailant if Nai simply saw it and assumed that it was Karuko's (a reasonable assumption to make because up to that moment Karuko is extremely likely to have been the only human being Nai knew existed).
On a completely random note, could Karuko not also be an animal\human? Perhaps evolving naturally in Niji forest's strange ecosystem? If sharp hearing is a Niji thing then Karuko may be displaying the symptoms Dr. Akari spoke of (Niji's don't survive well in captivity & Karuko is effectively being held captive). As I said, completely random & without foundation. I just find it interesting that although the two lived together there should be this assumption that they're not of the same species.
Does Karoku want the bad guys to know about Nai? I
( ... )
Karuko sounds like a girl's name, lol. You mean "Karoku", right? I've read up till chapter 30, but I don't know if I should spoil you. And now I have a somewhat different image of Karoku. He's not 100% evil, but he's not as pure as Nai thinks he is. He's definately capable of manipulating people - you can see this on many occasions.
As for the other part of your post, I have some answers, but I would be spoiling too much, I guess. Chapter 30 has cleared up some things about Karoku.
Not just because it seems cruel\excessive to proving the point but because if (as is heavily implied) Karuko is projecting those images onto Nai then how is he able to represent Gareki, whom he is never supposed to have met?
I think (if)he genuinely didn't know who Gareki was and so had to manipulate Nai's mind into giving up an image of Gareki which he then made "break". Which disturbs me, as it shows a casual attitude to playing with somebody's mind.
You have to remember that Nai doesn't understand many words at that point. Karoku obviously knows this, so he talks using words Nai can understand. Karoku hasn't met Gareki, but since he can read Nai's mind, I think he knows what does Gareki look like. Nai told him what happened to him after Karoku dissappeared.
This scene you mention is very interesting indeed. If you look closely, this "Gareki" he's projecting onto Nai resembles a pile of rubble, something "broken". In japanese "gareki" means "rubble". (Tough Gareki's name is read as "flower rubble").

Oh, of course because he was found washed up on pebbles.
Hmm, Karneval is certainly a series which makes one think. I love that, it's always a sign of a good fandom. I'll just have to puzzle things out as I go along.

Yes, I was afraid of that for Nai's sake. I hope he doesn't take it too hard. *hugs Nai*

Cool, I look forward to finding out more later then, thank you for the clarification. ^^
