This week was Holocaust Awareness Week at CSU. I attended a few events and was privileged to hear a panel of Holocaust survivors tell their stories and plead with the audience to remember the atrocities committed more than half a century ago and to take action to prevent them from ever happening again. But they've already happened again. Tonight I went to see a documentary about the genocide in Darfur. After the film there was a discussion and the facilitator asked us who we thought was responsible. One person said everyone who had the power to do something and didn't was responsible.
During the discussion I kept thinking of the scene in Hotel Rwanda when an American film maker is talking with the hotel manager about the footage he shot:
Paul Rusesabagina: I am glad that you have shot this footage and that the world will see it. It is the only way we have a chance that people might intervene.
Jack: Yeah and if no one intervenes, is it still a good thing to show?
Paul Rusesabagina: How can they not intervene when they witness such atrocities?
Jack: I think if people see this footage they'll say, "oh my God that's horrible," and then go on eating their dinners.
I don't want to be that person anymore.
