The Beatitudes from my NASB:

"Matthew 5
1 When Jesus saw the crowds, He went up on the mountain; and after He sat down, His disciples came to Him.
2 He opened His mouth and began to teach them, saying,
3 'Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
4 'Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.

I often feel as though I didn't treat my grandmother on my Dad's side as well as I should have. But my mom told me that we can't beat ourselves up about things that are in the past. What we can do is learn from the past, and apply it to the current day. Basically what you said at the end of your post. So when I felt bad about the way I had treated Gramma, I made sure to treat my other Grandmother, and my parents, and everyone else a little bit better, so I wouldn't have the same feelings when those people were gone. Also I was thinking about the beatitudes- I never really thought about "blessed are those who mourn" in conjunction with mourning deaths. I will have to study that one further.

I never really thought about "blessed are those who mourn" applying to anything other than mourning deaths until yesterday. I don't know why, but for some reason I didn't realize you could mourn for a loss other than death. One of the definitions on dictionary.com is: "To feel or express deep regret for: mourned the wasted years." Does this Beatitude apply to something like this?

I feel it would be any kind of loss that you have. Loss of a job, loss of a friendship, relationship...anything. It is nice to know that you will be comforted by God in those instances. He reaches out for us in anything we do or feel.

From my past studies of this passage, what Tink said is exactly what I always thought about. I never really thought much about deaths being connected, though that is the obvious connotation. I will have to post more when I get home and have my Bible/books and notes. :)
