Spock liked numbers; they were constant, unchanging, and forever. He preferred this logical approach because, well, numbers were omnipresent and true. Everything could be an equation. It was how Spock thrived - counting and logistics and formulas.
With Kirk, on the other hand, Spock found himself overwhelmed; Kirk was never one for numbers or formulas - he was about action and gut instinct. His passion for the Captaincy was obvious, and he took it without so much worry about the statistics or data - he did it for the love of adventure.
Sometimes Spock needed a break from numbers; Kirk was his outlet.
