Summary: Jasper longs to own his own emotions just this once. How could a russet skinned werewolf be of help?

Perpetually flung to and fro in a crashing sea of passion, it was difficult for Jasper Hale to remember a time when his emotions had been solidly his own. When a stranger felt sorrow, he wept tearless sobs. When his prey felt fear, adrenaline coursed through his own veins, prompting terrifying bewilderment and panic. Each time he ended a life, he felt death’s breath upon his own neck, a musty and frigid sigh of exhaustion. Both hatred and love were reciprocated blindly. A puppet bound by strings, his body danced between these feelings seemingly of its own accord.

Most of the time, it felt as though he had lost his capacity for true emotion all those years ago when Maria’s teeth delicately punctured his flesh. Since then, he had felt love, but it was a muted thing, not wholly here nor there. He consented to loving Alice, but was that true love? Or was it a mere shadowy impression of her blazingly excitable emotion? His mind plagued him with these questions even as he planted fresh kisses on her fey-like countenance, holding her tiny figure tight to his leonine body. She acted as an anchor regardless of his doubt, providing a weak meaning for his listless existence. Her presence kept the monster within temporarily at bay, though it still seethed within his chest at the slightest scent of ambrosia.

Alice would whisper reassurances in his ear. All the while, he hated those reassurances, longing to be the master of his own fate just this once….

Sometimes hatred was refreshing. He felt it now, burning just out of range. Jasper paused in his hunt, raising his head and sniffing the wind like the animals he pursued. There it was all right, the feral scent of reeking wolf. The beast paced just out of range along the boundary of their territory, shooting venomous vibes in his general direction. Jasper relished the emotion, soaking it in with a bitter smile. He had been overwhelmed lately by the dampening emotion of overwhelming attraction and this polar opposite was a welcoming sensation.

Embracing the passionate projection, he reflected that all of the couples in his life had recently been quite unbearable. With the reunion of Bella and Edward, the coddling emotion was literally stagnant in the Cullen abode. Then of course there was Alice, smothering him with her ever present concern. It repulsed him, ever so subtly driving him away from her with each worried glance.

It was in these moments of self reflection that Jasper decided for once to abandon all self control. Alice would invariably stalk him down and scold him for it later, but at that moment the call for freedom was much greater. Alice wouldn’t be able to see the direct results of his actions either, he thought with pleasure. Not with the pesky involvement of a vision impeding dog. A grin fixed on his sculpted face, he suddenly veered in the direction of the wolf, laughing as the dim hatred transformed into startled shock. However, the wolf did not sound an alarm and seconds later Jasper came to a blinding halt before the lupine figure of Jacob Black himself.

The shaggy wolf eyed him with guarded curiosity and Jasper reflected that emotion, studying his rusty brown fur with interest. Jasper realized with a rush of satisfaction that he felt no impulse to hunt his hideous smelling creation. He breathed the scent in deeply at this recognition. At Jasper’s bizarre action, Jacob’s intelligent eyes asked a question that didn’t require a mind reader for translation.

What the hell are you doing here and what the hell was that?

Jasper chuckled darkly, “I wish that I knew.” Jacob’s confusion had just crashed upon him and the empath shied away. It would be much easier to love a vegetable, he thought wryly. He could cast emotions upon it while it could never affect him. Too bad that relationship seemed highly improbable.

Jasper was about to turn away, abruptly unsatisfied, when Jacob made a sudden jerking motion. Wolf rippling into a boy, Jacob stood before him looking utterly bemused. Jasper froze, startled by the sudden feelings that rose within him at the sight of the boy’s glisteningly naked body. He was fascinated to realize that they were entirely his own, an emotion of his own making. Ecstatic at this revelation, Jasper hungrily roved Jake’s body with his eyes, exploring every russet contour from head to toe.

Jake shifted uncomfortably. Jasper felt his doubt and enjoyed it, allowing it to meld with his own unstable passion. One eyebrow raised, the boy cleared his throat. “Um. Since we don’t have the prude to translate for us, would you mind telling me what the heck this is all about, leech?”

But Jasper didn’t answer and Jake was silenced as Jasper sent a pulse of sensation whirling back in his direction. Jacob’s body tensed, horrified yet yielding to the unfamiliar emotions. He could not bring himself to pull away, even as Jasper lurched forward and their lips met in a clash of fire and ice. Jake was rooted in his spot as the cold desire swept through his limbs, warming him in a way that was unexpected. A slave to his own new found yearning, he moaned deeply as Jasper’s icy fingers traced circles down his torso. Jacob’s exclamation seemed to drive Jasper further over the edge and he laid a path of freezing kisses blazing down Jacob’s body.

Jacob gasped, his body on fire, not fighting, just feeling.

“Why?”

The wolf felt his emotions slip suddenly and he was vaguely aware of a foreign desperation. After a couple seconds he heard the leech’s strangled reply.

“To feel. To be…”

And the afternoon was lost.
