heartache and headache

Saturday evening was a nightmare, my bestfriend's daughter was bitten by my dog at my house in her face. still don´t know what happen maybe she pet him too much (he is not used to strangers pet him) but he was okay when 2 other outside children were running and screaming all morning so I don´t know what trigger the attack. anyway she was bitten in her face his lip and cheek have cuts but not too deep thank God, her parents and I went to emergency and a doctor stitch her lip and take care of the cheek wound, but she now needs to take a needle shot for risk of rabies. she is a lovely kid and I know she might be getting a scar in her face my heart and head aches everytime I thing about it, now I don't know what to do with my dog, he is not agressive but now I don't know, my niece was right next to the girl when the incident happen so she's now afraid of him. I'm not sure if he will attack again, but I love my dog because I have him for almost 10 years now, he was the last gift from my grandmother and everytime I think of giving him away from me is my heart and head so much pain, what should I do? please help me figure this out. Sorry about my english is not so good but I needed to take out this somewhere.
ps. I know for a fact the friendship with my bestfriend is not going to be the same, if I don´t do anything about my dog she is going to be mad and if I have to give my dog away I will felt like someone is taking my baby away, he is like my son.
