Somewhere Between Here and There

Bricks and Mortar

How often on this road it seems,
Inertia breeds divergent dreams;
And some on paths in search of truth
Abandon their ideals of youth.

We walk together to a point…
Until our conduits disjoint;
Then, passing into life’s next phase,
old friends depart their separate ways.

When words have come between strong ties
If now and then disputes arise,
Where sticks and stones might be excused,
A vacuum gapes at egos bruised.

But tracks wear much more desolate
Once traveling companions quit,
When those with whom we’ve shared so much
Begin to one by one lose touch,
As old familiars, badly scarred,
Have sought retreat behind their guard
Within the heart’s complete eclipse
Of intimate relationships.

Now steeled against both friends and foes,
Your callous thickens as it grows,
And you’ve extinguished life as well,
Locked safe in your protective shell.

Though one can’t rebuild inner strength
When you keep everyone at length;
Security may be the goal,
But quarantine erodes the soul.

Yet while some lost have since been felled,
The loyal heart can’t be dispelled.
It casts a shadow through your trails
To navigate where wisdom fails.

So promise me, before you go;
When all else fails, this you must know:
That if, one day when life is stressed,
And puts your character to test,
You lose your way or start to feel
Like nothing in this world is real,
And need to be reminded of
The innocence of honest love…

Please never overlook these blessed
Forgotten sentiments expressed
Of inner passions deep and strong,
Where two hearts sing one spirit’s song;

Just contemplate these thoughts, and then
Recall with passion once again,
With faith in words that once rang true,
And trust that love can break back through.

However far we’ve gone astray,
True love will always find a way
To set our differences aside,
And bridge the chasms that divide.
