On the past week, sleeping long hours and turning 32:
Otakon was enjoyable for spending time with friends. If not for the heat and sweltering humidity I'd have had a much better time. It is draining, and made me headachey and cranky. Some friends seem to have their lives put in perfect order, others are on the edge of a precipice, but when has this ever not been the case? I came away from the convetnion with, as always, a newfound appreciation for smaller events held in a single facility. I am more than ever looking forward to Katsucon 12 (and of course, the events later this year).
This week has been an introduction to the realities of resuming taking up life lessons. Art classes are very, very basic. How can I begin a career if I do not have a grasp of the basics of art and design? Can having an "implicit understanding" every compare with being able to put the meaning of art and design into words? In any case, I must believe that this is worthwhile, for there are moments when I feel that I might not have taken up Calculus this past semester, but instead should have stepped back to Addition and Subtraction to make it truly worthwhile.
Along with my sister Michelle, I'll be handholding my mom through a hip replacement surgery and the weeks and (let's be honest) months of recovery. It is a big step and reminds me that there are events in life that cannot be planned for, but must be accomodated.
I have been familiarizing myself with the mpq and blp formats, skinning, image adaptation, sound work (using Audacity, which is a free but seems capable), and art production using traditional media. There is much I need to throw out, physically. I now have about a month until I need to be out of the apartment.
This afternoon I watched the movie Immortal, which I stumbled across on the shelf at Blockbuster. I did not know that the Enki Bilal comics had been adapted into a film. It was dreamlike. I recommend it, but be ready for much dystopian oddness and occasional jarring counterpoint between human actors and CG artificial characters. It is a comics adaptation comparable to Sin City, in that it is the imagery put to film.
My best to all of you.
