Sometimes it really does feel like tilting at windmills....

So, I managed to become thoroughly infuriated whilst watching the news earlier, and all it took was a cute little story about a local robotics competition for area schoolchildren.

"But karma_aster," you might ask, "how could something like that anger you? After all, that's an event sure to encourage interest in math and science among local students while allowing them to embrace their inner-geek! Surely you should be crowing with joy about such a thing!"

Ah yes, but not when the news coverage in this case chose to focus almost exclusively on the male participants to the extent that, without some VERY brief group shots where you could make out some female students in the background, you'd assume there weren't any girls there AT ALL.

Now really, this wouldn't annoy me, except that DAMN, but we still seem to have that myth hanging on there about math and science pretty much being a boy's only club that females can't even COMPREHEND, let alone participate in.

Y'know...might just be me being my crazy feminist self, but doesn't seem a tad, oh, irresponsible? Especially given how intensely underrepresented women are in engineering and many hard science fields?

I just wish they'd taken a golden opportunity to show female students participating and having FUN with math and science. Who knows what little girl they might have encouraged with such a sterling example?

Well, I guess we'll never find out now. (sighs) Ah, what could have been...

rage, rants, feminism, dread politics
