Step Three to Victory for Mixed Member Proportional: Expand the Team

You thought the 60 per cent threshold made winning the vote for fairer democracy difficult. Queen’s Park just made it even harder.

Publications Ontario has knuckled under to political pressure from the No MMP gang, and has stopped printing and distributing bulk copies of One Ballot, Two Votes, the legacy pamphlet of the Citizens’ Assembly on Electoral Reform.

The defenders of the status quo claim it would be unfair for the province to educate voters why the Citizens’ Assembly flunked First Past the Post. Or why the Assembly preferred Mixed Member Proportional representation by a vote of 94 to 8. Or how MMP would work in Ontario.

Vote for MMP is a multi-partisan citizens' campaign supporting the Mixed Member Proportional (MMP) voting system that Ontarians will consider in the historic October 10 electoral reform referendum. The MMP system was recommended by the independent Ontario Citizens' Assembly on Electoral Reform, after eight months of intensive study, consultation and deliberation. See the Assembly's video below.

Why change the voting system? Under our antiquated first-past-the-post (FPTP) system, a party can win 40% of the votes, but capture 60% of the seats and 100% of the power. That’s why most major democracies scrapped it last century (see The Case Against FPTP).

MORE

The proposed MMP system will provide a better democracy with more choice, fairer election results and stronger representation. Learn about it, then show your support. Sign the MMP for ME! pledge, donate and/or volunteer. Together, we can make history on October 10!

Withdrawal of this critical public education tool hampers the activity of Vote for MMP volunteers who’ve been distributing the pamphlet to raise referendum awareness.

The elimination of widely-available printed information makes this e-campaign by Advocates of MMP absolutely critical. It is now the only reliable channel for quick and affordable communication among large numbers of reformers.

Let’s review how we are working together to build the Web Network for Victory.

STEP ONE: You went to www.VoteforMMP.ca, took the Pledge

STEP TWO: You asked a good friend to take the Pledge and become an Advocate for MMP.

STEP THREE: Call the same friend again, today and urge the pledge.

If all your friends take steps one, two, and three support for this historic referendum will build exponentially!

You, the volunteer Advocates of MMP, will make or break voting reform. To win we all have to abandon our shy and retiring habits. We have to ask our good friends to campaign with us, now, today, and stand up to win for a better, fairer democracy on October 10.
