Summary: She keeps waiting.

------

The stars were smiling at her. Donna was absolutely sure about it. She took a sip of her tea and caressed Robbie’s hair. He was sleeping in her old sweater and Gramps´ shoes. It had been twenty four days since Wilf died.

Her Mum kept looking at her like she was bonkers. She packed a bag with a thermos and some crisps; took blankets and Robbie along for the ride. He loved it. “We are going to visit Gramps,” he said every evening and Donna could see a lonely tear on her Mum´s cheeks. She wanted to kiss it away but it wasn’t so easy anymore.

Shaun visited every weekend. He took Robbie to places, like the circus and the zoo; they traveled to see and stay with his family in Scotland. She stayed home and used the time to wait, and prepare. She chose the right clothes and books, read and then wrote. Her notebook was quite full already. When she finished, she left it on Gramps’ grave.

Donna´s days went like this and she stopped noticing.

…….

“Mum? Will the angel come back?” Robbie asked her one Sunday afternoon and she nodded because she truly believed it. But there was a doubt, there was always doubt. Donna knew the Doctor, knew his carelessness brought them danger more than once. She knew all about him and because of that she kept waiting.

Sylvia tried to talk to her, to persuade her to go back to Shaun. To behave like any normal woman should; to love her husband and take care of her family. But Donna couldn’t; she already felt that she had betrayed her marriage just by being a different person to the one that said “I do” dressed in a white gown.

Shaun tried too, by being overly understanding. He told her she was confused and needed time. Sylvia kept nodding at his words and Donna tuned them out. She knew what she wanted.

“And will we go with him to see the stars?” Robbie asked and leaned over her to the telescope.

“He’d better,” Donna said and kissed his tuft of soft hair.

………

It had been almost a year. Robbie stopped asking about the angel and Sylvia stopped her usual speeches; now she just looked smug. And Donna still waited.

The blanket was on the hill every possible evening but now she was alone. Robbie started playschool and found out about cartoons, and heroes; he forgot about the real one.

Shaun found a girlfriend, a nice girl with a wealthy father who kept ignoring Shaun’s existence. Donna knew everything about Clarice; Shaun was too honest to keep her a secret. So she somehow became his friend. Donna knew a lot about complicated relationships between parents and grown up kids; and soon there was an annual tea party in the back garden.

Robbie was still interested in bugs and animals, and when Clarice brought him a puppy he was over the moon. He named him Shelby, and Donna prepared herself for cleaning up dog pee and excrement.

But it was Sylvia who complained all the time about him; and only the hill and the telescope made Donna stay.

…………..

“Why do you sit here all the time?” Clarice asked her and sat next to her on the blanket. It was Shaun’s turn to put Robbie to bed, and Donna used the time to go and sit under the stars. She was also actually surprised that she didn’t mind Clarice´s presence.

She smiled that small smile; the one she reserved for him and answered: “Shaun didn’t tell you? I’m waiting.”

There is a lot of confusion on the younger face, but Donna smiled some more and turned her gaze back to the stars.

……………

“So Miss Noble, I don’t see a reason we shouldn’t seal the deal.”

She expected these words but Donna wasn’t as happy as she should have been. It was a job, a good job, something more than temping. Something she maybe even wanted to do, but she was still afraid to settle. She wasn’t staying.

“Thank you, you won’t regret hiring me,” Donna said, her smile fake and her handshake weak. But the man didn’t notice; he seemed even happier than she was.

The news made Sylvia smile after a long time and that evening there was cake and a special tea. Robbie wasn’t put to bed at his usual time and it’s nearly midnight when Donna finally got up the hill.

She fell asleep there and was late on her first day.

…………

“I think Robbie’s child-like imagination is admirable, but Miss Noble, he seems to truly believe that an angel from space fell from the sky into your back garden. Other children are using it to tease him, and I think you know how cruel children can be,” the teacher said, and Donna didn’t like the way she looked at her.

But it also made her a little bit happy. She had been afraid that Robbie had completely forgotten. It seemed he had just stopped asking.

“I’m sorry, Mrs. Peabody, but I don’t see any problem here, and for your information an angel really did fell in our garden,” with this Donna stood up proudly from her chair and hugged Robbie who was waiting for her outside.

She kissed his forehead and touched his face as if she were seeing him for the first time.

“What about we buy some sweets, make hot chocolate and spent the evening on the hill?” she asked, and got an eager nod.

That evening everything was like before; they watched the stars and felt Gramps all around them. They fell asleep huddled together.

…………….

When Donna finally stood from the bed and made her way to the door, the intense knocking stopped. Clarice stood there looking very worried.

“Shaun told me you are both really sick, I came here to help you,” she said and motioned toward her bag full of unhealthy food.

Despite feeling like hell, Donna smiled and nodded. “Come inside, Robbie is asleep, but I would welcome some company.”

They made themselves comfortable on the couch, after Clarice had cleaned away all the tissues and papers. Donna started to like her even more.

“Who was the angel?” Clarice suddenly asked, making Donna look at her strangely. She wasn’t sure what Shaun had told her and she’d never asked before but it did seem like she’d been preparing this for a very long time.

And Donna felt like talking. “He was my friend, my best friend. He came to me because he was dying.”

“But he didn’t?”

Donna shook her head and took a sip from her glass of juice. “No, he didn’t.” Clarice asked more, and Donna answered; and after seventeen months of silence, the Doctor´s name was spoken again.

…………..

On Monday there was a bunch of red roses on her desk. Donna ignored them; she appreciated the gesture but she wasn’t the romantic type. There were 900 years of memories in her head, so trying to simply stun her with roses was a complete waste of time.

Donna spent twenty seconds analyzing who had put them on her desk and then took them and gave them to the older lady sitting at the reception desk. She smiled at her and sniffed the flowers which were proudly displayed on her desk for the rest of the week.

Later she saw her boss talk to her, and Donna saw roses on the reception desk more often.

…………..

The divorce papers arrived on the Wednesday, and while Sylvia dropped her cup Donna signed them without another word. She felt free and prepared for anything that might happen.

Clarice took her for a girls’ night out and she really enjoyed herself. They dove into a few tequilas and in the morning her headache didn’t make her head burn. Her skin was perfect for her; it wasn’t tight anymore and she smiled a lot more.

Sylvia thought it was because of some man. Clarice thought it was because of the divorce, and Robbie said that angel was coming back.

He was way too clever for his own age.

………….

“You are late,” she said, sitting on the hill. It was a sunny afternoon and she had gone there just because she felt him coming.

He came closer and sat next to her. “The chameleon circuit was broken, I couldn’t found the right time,” the Doctor said and Donna turned to him. He looked older, his eyes were haunted and she was suddenly very worried. What had he seen?

But she was too afraid to ask him right then. So she kissed him.

“I’m glad you are back.”

…………

He stayed, and every day Donna expected something to happen; aliens to come, the world almost come to an end, but nothing happened. She kept going to work, Robbie went to playschool and the Doctor stayed with them. The TARDIS needed more repairs so he kept himself occupied under the console.

When they came home, they were almost a family. Even Sylvia suddenly warmed up to him.

In the night he held her tight, sometimes too tight, and when Robbie became haunted by nightmares that weren’t his, he placed him between them.

“Are you going to stay forever?” Donna asked even though she knew it’s an impossible question. His nod was somehow hesitant and she instantly knew he was lying.

…………

Shaun and Clarice came on the Saturday, as usual, and found the TARDIS parked in the garden. The Doctor came out when he heard them.

“Oh, it’s you,” he said to Shaun. Then he hugged him and whispered, “Thank you” in his ear. Shaun looked at him strangely and introduced Clarice.

“I heard a lot about you,” she said and smiled. It’s too easy to be smitten by the Doctor.

He smirked. “Don’t listen to what they said; I am perfection.”

Just then Donna left the house and threw a napkin at him; Robbie was right behind her and Sylvia smiled because her house was full once again.

………..

It was midnight and the place next to her was empty. Donne learned a long time ago to expect this, but it still hurt. But there was a light coming from the garden, and when she looked through the window she saw the TARDIS parked in its usual place.

The relief she felt made her heart beat faster. She ran down the stairs and almost stumbled on the sleeping Shelby.

Donna opens the back door and stepped barefoot on the ground. The grass was slightly wet and she enjoyed the feeling.

The TARDIS doors were opened and she pushed them more apart, stepping inside. “Sorry, did I wake you?” the Doctor was standing near the console, his glasses were on and a few cables were in his hand.

“No,” Donna answered and went closer, taking his glasses off. She put them on the console and he observed her quietly. Then she smiled and leant over, kissing him lightly on the cheek. She moved her lips across his face placing kisses along the way.

She felt his hands hold onto her dressing gown and she opened it, letting it fall to the floor.

“Donna,” he rasped when she pushed her hands under his shirt. “Oh, Donna I missed you so much.”

His words confused her. He’d been there with her for seven weeks now, but he spoke with such sadness it tore her heart apart. She kissed him again, whispering: “I’m right here.”

The Doctor took them as words of redemption because he took her into his arms as if he never wanted to let her go and Donna accepted it. It was a promise.

…………

“Sweetheart, are you okay?” Sylvia asked, because there was a bag in the hallway and tears on Donna’s cheek.

But she smiled and turned to her for a while, holding the knife up. “It’s onion; he likes onions.”

Sylvia didn’t ask about the bag and flinched when the TARDIS started to disappear only for it to reappear a few seconds later. The Doctor came out smiling holding a bunch of flowers. He kissed Donna and offered them to Silvia.

“Hurisassian roses; they smell like your favorite flowers, just try them,” he said and thrust them under her nose. Sylvia sniffed them carefully. And yes, despite looking like normal roses, they smelt like jasmine, her favorite.

She took them. “Thank you.”

“You are very welcome, Sylvia Noble,” he grinned. He smiled at once and went over to Donna, stealing a piece of onion from the plate. “Hey!” Donna slapped his hand away and then Shaun stepped inside, his hand clasped in Clarice´s.

“Your bag is there,” Donna motioned toward the hall and he thanked her. Outside they all heard Shelby barking, Robbie laughing and his ball bouncing in the TARDIS. The sight was so normal it makes Sylvia’s eyes tear up.

The angel had fallen once again, but this time he stayed.
