It was finally here. The regionals. The day they were all preparing for. The New Directions were standing in front of the main room. They went all the way together, to achieve something and here was the final day, the day that will decide if it all was worth it.
They all changed, the more shy came out of their shelves and found friendship on the unexpected places.
Will stood behind them. Memories of the previous nine months swirling in his mind and there weren’t any painful ones of Terri or Emma, they were just happy faces of all these kids.
“We should move guys. You need to prepare yourself,” he spoke and they all snapped out of the trance and made their way to the room assigned to them. Rachel stayed a bit behind and stretched her hand toward him.
“You should come too,” she spoke and smiled at him. Will smiled back and accepted her hand. Rachel pulled him toward her and he tried to persuade himself that this is inappropriate but he could argue this whole situation was. They were all stressed and such small comfort as holding hands should be allowed.
Her small hand was completely buried in his and each time their shoulders bumped, their looks met.
They parted in front of the door and Rachel was about to enter when he stopped her. “Something is off with Finn and Quinn, maybe you can talk to him. He will listen to you.”
Rachel smiled.
“I know.”
He liked the way she understood.

To corner Finn wasn’t difficult. Rachel could see he was suffocating in the room with Quinn. She understood he was hurt by her lie but this was getting a bit too much. It was influencing their team dynamics and how hard it was to admit, they were a team and they could only win this together.
Finn leaned against the wall and sent her a quick smile before closing his eyes.
Rachel hoped that it was the right time. “Finn, I think we need to talk.”
He opened his eyes and look at her confused. “Sure,” he answered a little too carefully. When girls want to talk, it’s never good.
“I guess you already figured out we wouldn’t work. I just want to say it. There are many reasons but the most important being that you’re still in love with Quinn,” at the mention of her name Finn opened his mouth to object but Rachel expected him to and raised her hand to stop him.
“You don’t need to persuade me, I know already. The problem is there seems to be a tension that’s influencing the whole team, so I would be very glad if you dropped the charade,” Rachel finished and crossed her arms over her torso.
Finn was quiet, contemplating her words. She was right, of course, but what should he do? What Quinn did, or tried to do was just too much for him to accept. She was behaving like the girl that broke his heart all over again. Didn’t she understand that she didn’t need to lie, that she just could tell the truth and he would accept her?
But no, Quinn took the way of lies and machination.
“I just can’t forget her. I don’t understand why she did it to me, to you,” when he said the last part he didn’t realize that Rachel may not know about what Quinn attempted to do and if he was honest, he wasn’t sure himself. But Rachel accepted his speech without any indication that it all may be connected to her.
But she seemed to be pondering something, her brows furrowed in thought. Finn watched her and he couldn’t tell why in the hell didn’t he fall for her; it would be so much easier.
Rachel was completely lost in thoughts. There seems to be more things that were bothering Finn, she was sure the tension was cause because of Quinn lying about the baby. But what did Finn mean that she did something to her? She didn’t know, Quinn was perfectly nice to her, she even warned her about Mr. Schue.
Wait!
It made sense; Quinn said to her that Mr. Schue likes her because she knew about her past crush. She wanted Finn to see her in bad light. It was logical, when a girl wants a boy she can do anything and Quinn was obviously in love. Which meant that Rachel wasn’t, she stopped to try to get to Finn when she met Jesse and then she made peace with Mr. Schue and completely forget about Jesse too. There was just one conclusion. And when all the pieces finally clicked, Rachel raised her head and looked surprisingly at Finn.
“I know why she did it,” she said with conviction.
Finn looked more confused than angry. “How could you know that?”
Rachel smiled and took his hands in hers. “Quinn loves you. Quinn loves you so much that she did all those things. She was ready to sacrifice so much, just because of you. I would say she must want you very much, and I know you love her too. I think you should talk.”
Finn didn’t look convinced but there wasn’t time for more conversation when a voice broke from the radio.
“New Directions, you are up in 10 minutes.”

Rachel didn’t remember much after that. They run to the changing room and were on the stage in another moment. She always felt a powerful joy when she was performing. She could be sad or hurt but when she sung, it went into background. It was just her and the room.
Not the people, but the room.
She knew they sang “Don’t Stop Believing”, she remembered the difference between the two Rachels that were performing the song.
She saw Mr. Schue smile at her from behind the curtain and she knew she stretched her hand and he came on the stage to enjoy the applause.
After that it was blurry. The water broke, the paramedics came and they all cramped in three cabs with Artie´s wheelchair in the back. Quinn’s cries when they finally reached the hospital and then the peace came.
There was no one left to take the trophy.
