Summary: The Doctor always had the ability to sense any distress from his companion.

...

The Doctor always had the ability to sense any distress from his companions, with a help from TARDIS, images from nightmares, sadness and hurt told him that his presence is needed. And after their recent visit to Midnight, he wasn’t at all surprised by Donna’s nightmare.

The TARDIS led him to the library not to her bedroom and the Doctor cursed silently under his breath, it had to be a tough one if Donna left the solace of her own room.

She was huddled at the sofa, a white blanket around her. The Doctor had to check the temperature but he mentally slapped himself and went to sit next to her. Donna wasn’t cold from outside, her fluffy pink nightshirt proved enough warmth. It was the leftovers of the dream that made her seek the comfort of the blanket.

She looked at him and smiled sadly. “Can’t sleep too?” Donna asked and he nodded despite the lie. The Doctor didn’t want to make her uncomfortable.

They sat next to each other in comfortable silence; the Doctor kept opening and then closing his mouth again. He wanted to ask, really did but he was never good with these kinds of talk. The images from Donnas dream were still in his head, a feeling of fear and desperation. She gripped the blanket a little too tight.

“I’m sorry,” the Doctor said in the end. He supposed he couldn’t do anything wrong by saying this.

“What for?” she asked and stiffened a little and then he realized his mistake. He wasn’t supposed to know about her nightmare; Donna wouldn’t appreciate him getting into her head.

But he also knew that they really ought to talk about it. “For you nightmare, sometimes I forget how terrifying it all can be and I know I shouldn’t know about it. I’m sorry, for everything,” he talked too quietly, too slowly for his usual speeches and avoided looking at Donna for few seconds, he even expected a slap.

She was quiet and the Doctor risked a sideway look at her. Donna was trying to hold a cry; her eyes were glistering and her lips shaking a little. He immediately went for her hand and she took it as a sign to start crying.

The Doctor never dealt well with crying, he wasn’t the comforting type, and he always let others to do so. But there wasn’t anyone else and Donna didn’t seem to mind him. He sneaked an arm around her shoulder and pushed her toward him, she leant her head on his shoulder and the Doctor realized it wasn’t that difficult. Just to be there, to hold her.

He kissed the top of her head, and then her forehead and his lips lingered there. But the Doctor didn’t expect his body to react, that one simple touch of his lips to her skin will send him on the fire. Her skin was soft and smelt just too good.

He sighed a bit too loudly and Donna looked at him strangely, her hand still in his. She looked at him, really looked at him and the Doctor felt like she was reading him, that she turned the pages in his soul. Only in the presence of Time Lords did the Doctor felt this kind of connection.

When she seemed to find the things she was looking for, she looked away. He expected her to run away from him then, his feelings weren’t a part of their bargain.

But she stayed, squeezed his hand and took a deep breath before she started to speak.

“It isn’t just the nightmare. With you, fear is different, it isn’t just dreadful emotion, it means adventure, it means something new and unknown. I’m not afraid of aliens, Doctor. I’m afraid of you.”

He exhaled loudly about to pull away, the other meaning didn’t get to him just now and Donna stopped him from running.

“I’m afraid of losing you, I’m afraid what will it do to me, I’m afraid how much I depend on you, how much...” she stopped and stared on the floor for a while and the Doctor understood. He didn’t need any telepathic connection, her face was red and her breathing hard, he realized he had the same problem himself.

Before he could stop himself, to think it over, he reached and pushed her chin up. Their looks met and there wasn’t a stopping now. It was sealed, the truth was out.

He kissed her then, softly at first, but then the softness of her lips, the smell of her skin opened a door that the Doctor thought were closed forever. He felt hungry all of sudden, for affection, touches.

Donna wasn’t inactive either, she grasped his head in her hands, gave everything to the kiss, later let him slid his tongue inside her mouth.
The blanket slid to the floor with a soft thud and the Doctor pushed her softly on her back, the sofa big enough for both of them.

“I...,” he started when he realized what it’s about to happen but she put her finger on his lips to still him. He obeyed and watched with quite fascination as she started to open buttons on her nightshirt revealing a creamy skin. It was slow, too slow for his liking but he waited holding himself up above her.

One, two, three, four and when she touched the last button, the Doctor growled and kissed the place between her breasts. Donna laughed, mentally preparing a note about alien being same as human men but all words died in her through when he slid lower and she could feel tugging him at her pants. She raised her hips to help him and he get them completely off. Then he sat and pulled her up, getting rid of the shirt too.

Donna was laid back down and tried to hide from the look he was giving her, it was too much. Never did someone look at her that way, with awe and wonder and something she wasn’t ready to name yet. She pushed that talk for later and pulled his head down to her lips.

It was all too much after that, his hand sliding everywhere, everywhere. The Doctor found places Donna didn’t ever know she had, places that made her gasp, hold on his shoulders for support. He kissed and nipped and after a while, Donna realized he didn’t give her a chance to touch him back, he was devouring her, forgetting about his own needs on the way.

“Doctor, please now,” she whispered and he stopped his exploring to look at her. Her words not making sense at first in his clouded but when register, he nodded and swiftly shedding the rest of his clothes.

He leant his forehead against hers, their noses were touching too and Donna closed her eyes when he finally slid inside her. Finally, finally, her mind kept repeating when the sensation was coming in more forceful waves.

The Doctor kissed her temple, her cheek, her closed lids and when the world shattered around them; she was safe buried inside his arms. No nightmares came after this night and there in the future was written how the Doctor and Donna saved the universe more once.
