In a single act of defiance, decided to cut 2 hours of my review class to watch New Moon with
ikibuko and her Dan. I had a blast. While that doesn't take a lot to happen lately, consider that I only had about two hours to have that much fun. It's good that I was with the same company when I saw Twilight so that provided good continuity to the experience. Plus
ikibuko read the books so if I weren't tucking in my fries and chicken nuggets, I had somebody to whisper to and giggle with when the lovey dovey scenes were on.
So, the movie.
I like it. No, really. I hated the first one, considering I was still part of the flustering, vampire-high crowds back then. I thought this one's pretty good. I guess you could say that all those "unnecessary shirtless scenes" that made Ben Lyons so uncomfortable is one factor. But another was the mush. There was less of it this time. Mostly because Edward (Robert Pattinson) was just a floating mirage in a good part of the movie. And if there were some, they weren't so outrageous (my meter was the guy two seats away from me-- no cringing or harrumphing there). Then I like how Charlie (Billy Burke) got more airtime and of course, Jacob Black (Taylor Lautner).
Now I know I've said some mean things about Taylor Lautner playing Jacob, like I had any amour for Jacob's character at all, but I thought, 8-pack abs aside, that he did pretty well as the young shapeshifter. Not bad acting, very real and very intense. My favorite parts in the movie all had him in it. Also, kudos to his trainer and nutritionist. It is not an easy feat, bulking up an adolescent. I'm guessing they had to increase his protein uptake or something (let's hope it's not steroids).
That said, let me take this opportunity to announce my defection from Team Edward to Team Jacob. I'm sure nobody would mind, as Team Edward is now severely crowded due to people's gravitation towards Robert Pattionson's jawline. I still like Edward in the books but my favorite vampire is still Louis de Point du Lac (Brad Pitt) in Interview with a Vampire, followed by Eric Northman (Alexander Skarsgard ) in True Blood.
Ciao for now.
