An AO3 Query

Guys, how do you find fic on AO3? Both you personally and other methods you are aware of.

I tend to subscribe liberally. Mostly to anyone who's written something I enjoyed, and then I go through all their bookmarks and subscribe to writers I find that way. I don't watch for new fic unless it comes through email notification from someone I'm subscribed to, and I tend not to search for anything by tag/kudos/hit count. These days, I do also get to some fic through tumblr, but I'm also already subscribed to many of those same people on AO3.

But what do you do?

The reason I'm asking is because I put up a fic there yesterday. It's been less than 36 hours, and it's had over 8,000 hits. Which makes me think I'm missing some fundamental way that people are finding fic. How did all those people find the fic? That quickly. Some of that came from tumblr reblogging, but not all of it because there was no reblogging until today. And it was at 5,000 hits when I went to bed last night.

So how? I'm totally boggled by this. Are people watching tags?

how do things work?
