itchy feet

Perhaps it is the unexpected onset of gorgeous weather or merely the extended availability of daylight (such that I can actually experience a few hours of sun during workdays), but lately I seem to have begun taking an active interest in things again. Plans that seemed to require a monumental effort to make just a month or so ago are now every bit as easy as they should be. Last-minute applications are feverishly and desperately pursued rather than dropped in tired, sick resignation. And with each encounter with a friend or acquaintance's tales of recent travel (James's current foray into the Holy Lands featuring most prominently), wanderlust pushes further and further into the forefront of my mind.

I want to go back to India again, and traverse it from the backwaters of Kerala through the chaos of Mumbai and Kolkata to the ancient fortresses of Rajasthan. I want to backpack my way through Cambodia and Laos and Thailand and Vietnam. I want to walk through old Kyoto and duck into small wooden ramen stalls and relax into onsen in Hokkaido. I want to step into mosques in Turkey and hike through canyons into Petra and scuba dive in Australia.

Mostly I just want to get out of the country and out of my skin and be reminded of the vastness of the world outside my own head, because god knows I've been spending far too much time inside it. In the meantime, though, enjoying the bay area in all its cafe-spotted and activity-filled glory isn't a bad alternative.
