QUIET
Ennis didn't like it when Jack was quiet.
Lord knew that man could talk. Talked a blue streak. He didn't mind, though, it didn't bother him the way it used to when he was married to Alma. He always felt guilty when she talked, and dumb, when she'd pause in her ramblings and look at him like he was expected to say something.
Talking was probably Jack's biggest talent. He could tell stories, make Ennis laugh. Talk about the rodeo, about his sales work, about Lureen and Bobby. Ennis never felt dumb when Jack was talking. Or guilty.
But he did feel guilty when Jack got quiet.Because he knew it was because Jack was wanting something that Ennis couldn't give him. He knew Jack didn't get quiet on purpose, he wasn't resentful or sullen. He just got that faraway look in his eyes, and he got quiet.
And Ennis would try so hard to get rid of the quiet. He'd take Jack back in the tent and fuck him six ways to Sunday, trying so hard to get Jack to be happy again.
And usually after a while, Jack would start talking again, because he didn't have a mean bone in his body, and he knew how much it meant to Ennis to hear his voice.
Truth was, Jack's biggest talent wasn't for talking. It was for giving Ennis what he needed.
